Cowboys Star Wide Receiver Tells Steelers Fans What to Expect From Mike McCarthy
After 19 seasons coaching the Steelers, Mike Tomlin stepped down in January. The team hired Pittsburgh native Mike McCarthy as their new head coach. Their decision to hire the 62-year-old left many people wondering why they didn’t hire a young head coach. Two Dallas Cowboys players explained what Steelers fans can expect from their new head coach. Cowboys wide receiver CeeDee Lamb gave a glowing endorsement of McCarthy. On a recent episode of The Ross Tucker Podcast, Tucker asked Lamb what Pittsburgh is getting in McCarthy. Lamb replied, “Oh, my God, a great guy. He loves Pittsburgh. That’s my man. I love Mike. I love Mike. Coach McCarthy, he’s obviously, for those who don’t know, he’s the only coach that I’ve had besides Schotty.”
Lamb added, “Just coming in, he’s a great time. As soon as you walk in the building, you’re gonna feel his energy, and you’re gonna feel what he wants to do. He wants to go vertical with the ball. I’m gonna tell you that right now. He’s gonna do everything. He’s gonna tailor his offense and get things situated, but he’s got Pittsburgh down. Everything that he’s done has been out of love, man. Again, that’s another guy that I feel like I would run through a wall for. Mike did a great job of really just developing me in my first five years in the league.”
During a recent appearance on The Christian Kuntz Podcast, former Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee explained what it’s like to play for McCarthy. He said, “He’s got the incredible offensive background of being a play-caller, and then he’s got this ability to adapt his practices. He’s an unbelievable person, a great guy. A true football guy. So, you’re going to get the combination of this Pittsburgh old school toughness, along with his offensive innovation.”
From 2020 to 2024, McCarthy was head coach for the Cowboys. Prior to that, he served as the Green Bay Packers’ head coach from 2006 to 2018. With quarterback Aaron Rodgers, McCarthy led the Packers to victory in Super Bowl XLV. The Packers defeated the Steelers 31-25. McCarthy’s overall coaching record is 174-112-2 in the regular season. His .608 winning percentage ranks 15th in NFL history among head coaches. His playoff record is 11-11.
McCarthy is proud to be the new Steelers’ head coach. When he was formally introduced by the team, he said, “Oftentimes, coaches and players put on new team colors, and it takes a minute to feel comfortable in them. If you are blessed beyond measure, one day you put on the colors you’ve worn since you were brought home from Mercy Hospital.” He continued, “I want to express my gratitude to Art Rooney, Omar Khan, Dan Rooney, and the entire Steelers organization for the trust they have placed in me to represent one of the most storied franchises in all of sports. I understand and embrace the responsibility, the privilege, and the weight that comes with this stewardship. This city, this franchise, and this fan base mean the world to me, because Pittsburgh is my world.”
