Dallas Stars Trade Power Forward to Seattle Kraken

NHL

The Dallas Stars are continuing to make moves to add strength and power to their team after another disappointing loss in the Western Conference Finals. After just relieving head coach Pete DeBoer from his duties, the Stars have traded forward Mason Marchment to the Seattle Kraken. The Stars gained a 2025 fourth-round pick and a 2026 third-round pick from the trade. What will both teams gain from this trade?

The Marchment trade came just hours after the Stars re-signed Matt Duchene, extending him on a four-year, $18 million contract. This extension took up a lot, almost all of Dallas’ cap space. With Marchment being traded, the Stars have cleared up four and a half million dollars in cap space, giving them more room to work with this summer during free agency. Though Marchment proved to be a strong player, after another disappointing end to the Stars' season, it was clear that they needed draft picks and cap space in order to expand their team and push past the barrier keeping them from being Stanley Cup Champions. Marchment ended up being a perfect exchange for that.

This trade is also great news for Seattle. It’s been clear that the Kraken have been in need of more scoring power, and Marchment can deliver exactly that. Not to mention Marchment’s experience in the playoffs, giving him an advantage in high-stakes situations. The six-foot-five forward will also give the Kraken an advantage in front of the net. With Marchment on a line with some of the Kraken’s already great forwards, Seattle will have much more strength and power behind the puck.

Though this is personally upsetting news to me, this trade could work out really well for both teams. Dallas desperately needed some open space in order to fill in gaps in their roster, and trading Marchment not only cleared up necessary cap space, but also gave some draft picks that will allow them more room to grow. For Seattle, a team that has not so quietly been struggling, having this added strength and scoring ability can possibly give them the boost they need. Keep an eye out for more trade and contract updates as the 2025-2026 season comes closer.
