Did the New York Giants Make the Right Decision with Their Fifth Overall Draft Pick in 2026?

NFL

The New York Giants entered the 2026 NFL Draft under a ton of pressure. After yet another up-and-down season for the G-Men, the fifth overall pick gave them a huge opportunity. For an organization trying to get back into football's good graces, this pick wasn't just another player; it was about finding that missing piece. The question on Giants fans' minds this week is, did they make the right choice?

The Giants had many names rumored to be selected at number five. The most talked about was Ohio State Safety Caleb Downs. The Giants had a big need to strengthen the secondary, and he was thought to be a no-brainer if available, and he was. The Giants, though, shocked many fans by selecting linebacker Arvell Reese from Ohio State. The high-motor defender was predicted by many to go second overall to the Jets, but they passed on him for Texas Tech Linebacker David Bailey, and he fell all the way into the Giants' lap. The problem some have with this choice is that, while Reese may have been the best available player, he doesn't fill a role like Downs or another defensive back would. The Giants currently have a strong defensive front, including Names like Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibidouex, Abdul Carter, and newly added Tremaine Edmunds. So, how does the explosive second-level presence make sense? Well, Reese is a player who can play a multitude of roles. He is an off-ball linebacker who can be placed as an edge rusher and can be moved around all gaps in the defense. With so much talent around him, he will be a Swiss army knife linebacker and create an even more ferocious Giants defense.

While certain fans didn't love the pick, most NFL analysts were all for it. ESPN's Matt Miller Ranked Reese as the 10th-best pick in the draft. This pick comes with lots of expectations, so for this pick to be a success, the Giants' coaching staff is going to have to make sure to develop Reese's weak points. The developmental defensive piece relied heavily on his gifted athleticism at Ohio State, something that doesn't fly in the NFL. For New York, they will have to prioritize pass-rush plans for Reese if they want him to reach his full potential. Luckily for them, they have a strong front seven to advise the 20-year-old. Another reason why this could be the right pick for the Giants is because of the past. The last time the Giants were a feared defense, they won a Super Bowl, and it was mostly thanks to the stellar front seven. Picking the physical run-stopper completes the stack of a scary yet similar type of players to that defense that was the anchor of the Giants' Super Bowl run over a decade ago. On paper, the Giants added a player who was looked at as the best defensive player in the draft for a team lacking in success. This is a good sign. Now comes proving why this was the right pick on the field.
