Do the 2026 Miami Hurricanes Have the Most Talented Roster in College Football?
After a very overachieving 2025 campaign, which included an appearance in the National Championship Game, the Miami Hurricanes are reloading and looking to make another deep run in the College Football Playoff. It's no secret that last year’s squad was talented, with LB Rueben Bain Jr. being a wrecking ball on defense and someone every offense feared going up against. Unfortunately, the NFL came calling for his name, and Bain Jr. would enter this year’s NFL Draft along with several other players from Miami, including CB Keionte Scott, who will be joining the linebacker with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Along with the retained players from last year, the Canes added 13 valuable players via the transfer portal, all of whom are expected to make a huge impact this fall.
One of those incoming transfers is former Duke QB Darian Mensah, who helped the Blue Devils win the ACC Championship last year and will look to showcase his arm in South Florida during the 2026 season. Mensah led the ACC in passing yards with 3,973 and passing touchdowns with 34, which were both better than last year’s Miami QB Carson Beck, who also played two more games than the four-star recruit. The former Duke QB is not the only Blue Devils transfer heading to Miami, as he’s being joined by one of his favorite targets from last year, WR Cooper Barkate. In just his first year playing college football, Barkate racked up over 1,100 receiving yards on just 72 receptions and is looking to continue that success in Miami. Luckily for Mensah, Barkate is not just the only route runner on the field, as the speedy WR Malachi Toney will be returning for his sophomore year. Toney was a huge asset during the Hurricanes’ run last year and scored the game-winning touchdown against Texas A&M during the first round of the 2025-26 College Football Playoffs, along with leading the entire FBS in receptions last year with 109. As for the freshman class this year, the Hurricanes’ defensive line just got a little stronger with the addition of five-star recruit Hayden Lowe, who stands at six-foot-five and 255 pounds.
The schedule for Mario Cristobal’s squad this year is nothing to panic about. The three toughest games are at Clemson, at Notre Dame, and hosting Florida State. These are all winnable games, and even if they drop one, the Canes should still get into the 26-27 CFP. The rest of their schedule consists of middle-of-the-pack ACC opponents and some mid-major teams, none of which should even have a chance of beating last year’s second-place finishers. When comparing rosters across all of college football, it is hard to compete with this year’s Miami Hurricanes team, and it would be a shame if they don’t even come close to another National Championship Game appearance.
