Do the Cowboys Have the Newest Elite Quarterback Receiver Duo?
The Dallas Cowboys fell short in their bid for a third win of the season against Carolina, and yet again, disappointment on the defensive side of the ball cost Dallas the game. Former Cowboy Rico Dowdle urged his teammates before the game to “buckle up,” and Dallas certainly hoped they took his advice. Dowdle delivered an impressive performance, amassing 239 all-purpose yards with 30 carries for 183 rushing yards, along with four receptions for 56 yards and one touchdown. George Pickens' play was a bright spot in this game, especially with CeeDee Lamb out. Despite it only being six weeks into the season, Dak Prescott and George Pickens are now respected as one of the elite wide receiver-quarterback duos in the NFL.
Pickens had nine receptions for 168 yards and a touchdown in this game, and he made highlight play after highlight play. His first big play was catching a ball from Prescott over the middle and then proceeding to hurdle a man in the process. He continued to connect with Prescott and make deep plays, including a touchdown from a slant route where he ran 34 yards for the score. With Pickens being Prescott’s clear-cut number one without Lamb and the offense still putting up elite numbers, it begs the question of how talented they could be once Lamb returns.
Since the Lamb injury, Pickens has racked up over 424 receiving yards, 24 catches, and five touchdowns. Pickens has set numerous records during this brief period, becoming the Cowboy with the most receiving touchdowns in his first five games and surpassing his previous touchdown record. A lot of the credit has to go to Prescott as well; with him playing some of the best ball of his career and being a potential candidate for MVP based on the way he is playing, he has really helped Pickens grow. The trust these two have built in a short amount of time is impressive, to say the least. Prescott is already part of one of the top duos alongside Lamb, and he is developing another elite connection at wide receiver with Pickens.
