Does Chicago Have a New Leader in the Receiver Room?

NFL

For a long time, Chicago has struggled to have a strong passing game. Under the new leadership, the hope for the entire offseason was that the air attack would become a strength for the Bears. Week One may not have fully shown this as the team struggled against the Vikings' defense, but there were a few hopeful signs. One of the most important parts of this passing attack was who was leading the way in the receiver room, and it may not be the guy many assumed it would be.

Since joining Chicago, DJ Moore has been the primary target on the team. Last year, this was no different as he had 140 targets and 98 catches. While the team has done its best to strengthen the room, Moore is still thought of as the top guy. At least, that was until Rome Odunze started to make his name known. The second-year star had a solid rookie year. He finished with 54 catches for 734 yards and three touchdowns. He also recorded 101 targets, which was the third most on the team. Those signs, coupled with the fact that he has been shown to have good chemistry with Caleb Williams, made him a huge topic of the offseason.

There was some skepticism present, as every year, there are players hyped up who do not end up working out. However, against Minnesota, Odunze showed that this year, he may have the breakout many thought he would. He did not have the strongest performance, as he only had 37 yards. There was still a lot that went right for him. He recorded six catches on nine targets, both of which led the team. In addition to that, he recorded the lone touchdown pass from Williams. The other positive side of the performance comes when you compare his numbers to Moore’s.

Odunze almost doubled him in targets, as Moore only had five. In addition to that, the difference was also shown in catches as Moore had three to Odunze’s six. In the battle for Williams' top choice, it was clear who won Week One. Chicago certainly hopes both receivers meet the high hopes placed upon them, as it would form a very strong one-two punch. If they both continue to push each other, then the Bears may finally have the offensive group that can change the direction of the franchise.
