Does Guedes Still Belong at Wolves?

Wolves have had a busy summer so far, and it doesn’t look like it’s stopping anytime soon. With some players already gone, others waiting for their move, and new arrivals coming in, the club needs to sort things out quickly. One name that is at the top now is Gonçalo Guedes. After a long stay at Wolves, it looks like his time at Molineux could be coming to an end.

Wolves signed Gonçalo Guedes from Valencia in the summer of 2022 for around £27.5 million. The winger arrived with Champions League experience, a strong reputation in La Liga, and plenty of excitement surrounding his potential impact. However, things never quite clicked. Guedes struggled to adapt to the pace and physicality of the Premier League, and his performances quickly became inconsistent. What started as a high-profile signing soon became a major disappointment.

During this past season, Guedes once again just hasn't stepped up to the plate. With 29 Premier League appearances in 2024–25, he managed to score just two goals and provide four assists. On the pitch, he looks hesitant on the ball, struggles to create chances, and he just feels almost lifeless. In short, he just doesn’t look like the player Wolves signed.

To make matters worse, Guedes is currently Wolves’ highest-paid player. With Matheus Cunha and Pablo Sarabia leaving the squad this summer, Guedes now tops the wage bill at £90,000 per week. When a player earns that kind of money, there’s an expectation that they will perform consistently and make a real impact. It’s one thing for lower-paid players to struggle, but when a club's top earner underdelivers, it becomes a serious problem. With two years still remaining on his contract, keeping him on such a high salary simply doesn’t make sense for Wolves.

Adding to the situation, Guedes himself has shown little interest in staying at Molineux. Reports suggest the winger is open to a move this summer, seemingly eager for a fresh start elsewhere. According to Luiz Antonio Rubro Negro, South American giants Flamengo have expressed interest in Guedes. While nothing has been finalized, the player’s openness to leaving indicates that both he and the club may be ready to go their separate ways.

Guedes has done his best for Wolves, and there is no questioning his talent. Sometimes, however, a player simply needs a new environment and a different challenge to truly thrive. At this point, a fresh start could be the reset he needs. For Wolves, moving on from a high earner who no longer fits the system is a logical step. In the end, parting ways appears to be the right move for both sides.
