Does the Trade for a Three-Time Pro Bowl Wide Receiver Make the Patriots Super Bowl LXI Contenders?

NFL

On June 1st, the Philadelphia Eagles traded three-time Pro Bowl wide receiver A.J. Brown to the New England Patriots for a 2027 fifth-round pick and a 2028 first-round pick. So, what does the trade for Brown and New England mean for the 2026 season? During Super Bowl LX, the Patriots’ offense struggled, scoring just 13 points against the Seattle Seahawks' monstrous defense. Now, Drake Maye has a definitive top receiver on the field by his side, alongside other top receivers who’ve experienced success with the 23-year-old quarterback last season.

In 2025, the Patriots went 14-3 and were ranked as the second-best team in the AFC behind the Denver Broncos. They defeated the Los Angeles Chargers in the Wild Card Round, then the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round, and finally the Broncos in the AFC Championship before falling short to Seattle during Super Bowl LX. While New England played a lot of weaker teams in 2025, the whole team still showed they can play with the league’s best. During the 2026 season, they’ll face a lot tougher opponents; in fact, 10 of the Patriots’ 17 games will be against teams that appeared in the NFL Playoffs last year. Brown will have to prove his misfortunes with Philadelphia last season were a fluke, and he’s ready to be a Pro Bowl wide receiver once again. If the 28-year-old can transform himself back into one of the best receivers in the league, New England will undoubtedly be in a position to compete for a Super Bowl Championship once again.

The AFC will be even more wide open in 2026 than it was last season. In 2025, the Cincinnati Bengals and the Kansas City Chiefs surprisingly missed the playoffs due to injuries and failing to win in big moments. Now, you certainly can’t count them out in 2026. With the Patriots, Bengals, Chiefs, Broncos, Chargers, Texans, Buffalo Bills, Baltimore Ravens, Jacksonville Jaguars, Pittsburgh Steelers, and Indianapolis Colts all vying for one of the seven playoff spots, the AFC will truly be a fight to the finish. New England has what it takes to be Super Bowl LXI contenders; they don’t need to have a 14-3 record, but they do need to find success during the right points of the season, stay healthy, and keep the momentum from last season going. Maye can find success again; he found it with a 32-year-old receiver in Stefon Diggs in 2025, and he can certainly elevate Brown’s game as well. Only the Patriots can stop themselves from being Super Bowl LXI contenders.
