Former 2022 Undrafted Cornerback Out for Season: Dolphins Secondary Hit Hard Ahead of 2025

NFL

The biggest storyline for the Dolphins this offseason has revolved around the uncertainty in their secondary. Unfortunately, the answer arrived today, and it’s not what Dolphins fans wanted to hear. With training camp in full swing, the risk of injuries is always high, and Miami has now lost one of its key defensive pieces. Cornerback Kader Kohou, the former 2022 undrafted gem, will miss the entire 2025 season after suffering a partially torn ACL.

Kohou was undoubtedly the Dolphins’ best cornerback heading into the year. The 26-year-old burst onto the scene as a rookie in 2022, not allowing a single touchdown on 417 snaps through Week 10 as injuries forced him into a larger role. With Miami’s secondary already thin, Kohou was expected to carry an even bigger load this season, but now he won’t take a single snap. The injury occurred during Saturday’s practice when Kohou tweaked his knee and slid across the turf. He initially walked off under his own power, and early reports suggested it was a minor, day-to-day issue with swelling. Unfortunately, further testing confirmed the season-ending ACL tear.

With Kohou out, the Dolphins may be forced to dip into the limited cornerback market. Miami has shown interest in veterans Rasul Douglas and Asante Samuel Jr. throughout the offseason, but has yet to pull the trigger. On Saturday, the Dolphins quickly responded by signing cornerbacks Mike Hilton and Jack Jones to add veteran depth. Hilton, best known for his success as a slot corner with the Bengals, could be a key piece moving forward.

On Sunday, Miami also restructured the contract of recently acquired safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, creating much-needed financial flexibility. The move gives Fitzpatrick an additional two million dollars this season while freeing up roughly $11 million in cap space. He’s now due $17.5 million in 2025 and $15.6 million in 2026, giving the Dolphins room to maneuver for secondary help in the coming weeks. Additionally, Miami hosted tight end Noah Fant, who was recently cut, as they continue to explore upgrades at multiple positions. Yet, with Kohou’s devastating injury, expect the Dolphins to prioritize adding at least one veteran cornerback, if not two, as they try to stabilize their secondary ahead of the 2025 season.
