Former Light Heavyweight Champion Faces ‘Black Jag’ for Gold in the Main Event of UFC 327

UFC

Earlier this week, UFC 327 looked like an average card that was missing that one big fight to make it feel like a banger card. Not only did we get that massive main event announced last night via Dana White’s livestream, but a few other fights were added to make UFC 327 look like one of the better numbered events for the year, despite the limited buildup. The main event in question? Jiri Prochazka vs. Carlos ‘Black Jag’ Ulberg for the recently vacated Light Heavyweight Championship.

Prochazka won the belt at UFC in the main event of UFC 275 against Glover Teixeira. He was poised to be the next great Light Heavyweight Champion for the UFC. Ironically, he lost the belt in his next fight to one of Teixeira's partners and students in former two-time Light Heavyweight Champion Alex ‘Poatan’ Pereira. They would have a rematch seven months later, leading to the same result for Prochazka. ‘Poatan’ finished Prochazka both times in dramatic fashion. Pereira had the division in his hands. He could’ve been UFC's Light Heavyweight Champion as long as he wanted to be. It seems as of last night, he no longer was interested in defending the light heavyweight strap, paving the way for fan-favorite Prochazka to become a two-time UFC Light Heavyweight Champion without facing the only person to ever beat him in the UFC.

Across the octagon from Prochazka is another fan favorite in Ulberg. ‘Black Jag’ has yet to sniff the Light Heavyweight Championship. While he hasn’t fought for gold just yet, he has won his last two fights against former title contender Dominick ‘The Devastator’ Reyes and former UFC Light Heavyweight Champion Jan Blachowicz, whom Texeira beat to become the oldest UFC Light Heavyweight Champion ever. This experience gives ‘Black Jag’ the confidence he needs to bring into a title fight of this magnitude. Ulberg will look to build off this momentum and use it to gain the Light Heavyweight Championship.

The best thing about this matchup is that both men have had quite similar paths and somewhat similar fighting styles. Both men made their UFC debuts in 2020. While Jiri has only fought eight times, Ulberg has fought 11 times. None of Jiri’s fights have reached the judges’ scorecards; Ulberg has only been a part of three decisions and has a finish via rear-naked choke. Both men bounce back with a win if they lose, which isn’t often. Both men have a highlight reel of knockouts in the UFC and are some of the most entertaining fighters to watch in the Light Heavyweight Division because of it. While Jiri has a unique fighting style of constant forward pressure and attacks, little to no defense, and awkward bodily movements difficult to time, Ulberg is a more calculated striker who picks his opportunities to strike and will pull out a takedown attempt if the fight calls for it. Don’t expect this ground to go to the ground unless Jiri is beating up ‘Black Jag’ on the feet. This is a recipe for a fight filled with bonuses and accolades like Fight of the Night for UFC 327, Fight of the Year for 2026, and most likely Knockout of the Year for 2026. Your chances of getting struck by lightning are higher than this fight reaching the judges’ scorecards.

While the main event was the second biggest piece of news to get dropped last night, there were some updates and new fights added to the rest of the 327-card. Dana White Contender Series hopeful Christopher ‘The Newborn’ Alvidrez will take on Francisco Prado at welterweight. This will most likely be on the prelim or early prelim card. Alvidrez will look for his first win outside the DWCS in the UFC. Prado is on a three-fight losing streak and is looking to find any way to stop the skid. Vicente ‘The Silent Assassin’ Luque will now make his middleweight debut against TUF winner and former middleweight title contender Kelvin Gastelum. Both men have had their share of success in the UFC. This fight could be entertaining as one of the first fights on the main card. We could see the veterans put on a good fight that entertained long-time fight fans. Former three-time Bellator Featherweight Champion, former Bellator Lightweight Champion, and current 12th-ranked UFC featherweight Patricio ‘Pitbull’ Freire fights former top Bellator featherweight contender Aaron Pico. Both men lost their UFC debut bouts, with ‘Pitbull’ securing a win in his last bout last July. Pico also looks to get a win over a former Bellator champion, something that never came to fruition in his time there despite being a worthy title challenger. Mateusz ‘Gamer’ Gamrot faces off against Esteben ‘El Gringo’ Ribovics in a lightweight bout. ‘Gamer’ is looking to bounce back from his last bout in a loss against former Lightweight Champion Charles ‘Do Bronx’ Oliveira, while ‘El Gringo’ looks to build a win streak after his last win in August last year. The clash of styles could be interesting. Gamrot will look to take the fight to the ground and unleash devastating ground-and-pound, as Ribovics will work to land lots of significant strikes and maintain the distance. Lastly, UFC veteran Beneil Dariush will look to stop the up-and-coming Manuel ‘El Loco’ Torres in their lightweight clash. Dariush, one of the longest-tenured UFC fighters today, is coming off a knockout loss against Benoit ‘God of War’ Saint Dennis. ‘El Loco’ scored a knockout in his last bout in December.

Although the updates earlier this week seemed a little disappointing and confusing, last night’s updates for UFC 327’s card have fight fans excited in anticipation for April 11. Two titles will be on the line. Some younger fighters are getting the opportunity to beat established names to maintain their position in the UFC. Fight fans who enjoy slug fests and striking precision are likely to enjoy this card. This has all the potential to be a fight card where the judges won’t be necessary.
