Former NCAA Champion Aims to Continue Reigniting NBA Career with the Grizzlies

NBA

Ty Jerome is hoping to build on the momentum from what was without question the best season of his NBA career. After missing the entire 2023-2024 NBA season due to a lingering ankle injury, the six-foot-five guard returned to action in 2024-2025 and reminded everyone why he was once a first-round pick. Healthy and sharp, Jerome played with renewed confidence, averaging career highs across several categories while providing a steady presence off the bench. His playmaking, outside shooting, and decision-making were all significantly improved, earning praise from coaches and teammates alike. Now back on the radar, the 27-year-old enters free agency as a poised and polished option for teams in need of a dependable guard.

Jerome rose to prominence as a key part of the University of Virginia’s 2019 national championship team. His high-IQ play, court vision, and clutch shooting helped guide the Cavaliers to their first title in school history. That success translated to the NBA Draft, where he was selected 24th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers before being traded to the Phoenix Suns. Over the next few seasons, Jerome had stints with the Thunder, Warriors, and Cavaliers, flashing potential as a backup guard with a solid feel for the game. His standout season in Oklahoma City in 2020-2021, in which he averaged 10.7 points and 3.6 assists per game, hinted at his long-term potential, but injuries continued to interrupt his rhythm.

After missing the 2023-2024 season, some questioned whether Jerome would be able to bounce back, but he responded with his most efficient and confident stretch of basketball to date. Appearing in 70 games for the Cleveland Cavaliers this past season, Jerome averaged 12.5 points per game while shooting a career-best 51.6% from the field and 43.9% from three-point range. His shooting versatility, ability to run the offense, and knockdown shooting made him a vital part of Cleveland’s second unit. He often served as a spark plug off the bench, and his composure in crunch time stood out throughout the season. Coaches praised his basketball IQ and competitive edge, and his emergence gave the Cavaliers valuable depth during a strong playoff push.

Now officially signed with the Grizzlies on a three-year deal worth $28 million, Jerome will look to carry over the success from his 2024-2025 resurgence. His vision, shooting ability, and leadership qualities could make him an immediate contributor on a team looking for backcourt depth. Whether he’s asked to be a secondary ball handler or step into a bigger role, Jerome brings poise and championship experience to a locker room. With his confidence and rhythm fully restored, the former NCAA Champion has a real chance to thrive in Memphis. At just 27, Jerome still has plenty to offer as he enters this exciting new chapter in his basketball journey.
