Former Seahawks Starter Moves to Commanders

NFL

Hours ago, George Fant, a former Seattle Seahawks offensive tackle, officially left the Seahawks nest and flew the coop to the other side of Washington, this time with the Washington Commanders. Now this begs the question, or rather so many different questions on fans’ minds. What could this mean for both teams? Could Seattle have lost one of their best potential players this early in the season? Could the Commanders have gained a star-studded member to their roster in this shakeup? Or better yet, is this all just a terrible financial choice for both teams and could cost them both in the long run?

Fant isn’t exactly a total newcomer when it comes to playing in the NFL. He started in Seattle from the 2016 season as a free agent, taking it all the way to the 2019 season. Before eventually moving on to the New York Jets from 2020 to 2022, not long after that. Bouncing over to the Texans for a single season before eventually running it back to Seattle one year later in 2024. Now that he’s with the Commanders, it seems this is the third new team in the span of a decade that Fant has bounced around over the course of his career. Could the Commanders be his final stop without changing over to yet another team, or will he be let go for a fourth time during or even after this upcoming 2025 season? There’s still a lot of time to see what path Fant will go down this season as a player.

All of these questions and more have been slowly coming to mind as I have done my research. Yet, with six former Seahawks, including Fant, now on the Commanders’ 53-man roster, the standard for NFL teams is set. Though he is not alone, joining along with other Seattle players like Bobby Wagner, Nick Bellore, Jacob Martin, Tyler Ott, and now recently, signed just like Fant, River Cracraft. Seems that Seattle tends to be high on the pecking order for the Commanders to just swoop in and take a lot of their former cooks in the kitchen. Either that is all just pure coincidence, or maybe the two teams are so local that shakeups like these are more of a convenience rather than a financial burden.

Though, with the fact that the Commanders wanted to have yet another offensive tank on their roster. This gives more hope for them than it does for Seattle recovering from this loss. This doesn’t seem like a signing that would cost much on paper, so far. Even though final roster cuts are set to take place next week on August 26th, there cannot be, or hopefully not be, too many more shakeups between now and then. With Fant’s veteran talent, there could be a jolt of energy to bring the Commanders back to life, despite having a short contract span so far with the team as of writing. We will just have to wait and see how this signing all truly plays out as well when we see the Seahawks and the Commanders go head-to-head on television, November 2nd, 2025.
