From Trade to Takeover: The Six-Time All-Star’s MVP Push in Los Angeles

NBA

The Kia MVP Ladder has had a six-time All-Star fluctuate between ranks second and fourth, indicating that the statistics and team impact highlight a player performing at a rare peak in the modern era. This player currently leads the league in scoring with 33.8 points per game, along with eight assists and rebounds. The Slovenian point guard's late-season momentum carried over into March 2026, when he scored over 600 points, breaking Kobe Bryant's record for the most points scored in a single month for the Lakers. He also joined Michael Jordan as the only players to reach that milestone in March. Despite a league-high usage rate of 37 percent, the 27-year-old's efficiency remains strong. The numbers in March included 13 straight games of 30-plus points, highlighted by a 60-point game against the Miami Heat on March 19. Luka Dončić is certainly having a season to remember. The move that brought the All-Star to LA has shifted from curiosity to an engine of success, with a convincing shot at MVP.

The Lakers' 15-2 record in March boosted their overall record to 50-26, placing third in the West. MVP voters favor compelling narratives despite him winning key games in the stacked West. Luka's 2025-26 season boasts many historic achievements. He became the third-youngest NBA player to reach 15,000 career points, after LeBron James and Kevin Durant, and is only the fifth Lakers player to record multiple 30-point triple-doubles in a single season. The six-foot-eight point guard's biggest rivals remain Victor Wembanyama, leading the 58-win Spurs with elite defense, and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, leading the Thunder consistently. The MVP race for 2025-26 has been one of the most data-rich in NBA history. If MVP is about the best-performing player during the regular season, Luka's league-leading scoring, historic franchise records, and late-season surge make him the clearest contender in the league.

Voters are highly focused on the Lakers' franchise history. Dončić is not only leading the league but also breaking the Lakers' records systematically. In the recent victory against Indiana, the Slovenia-born point guard scored his 14th 40-point game of the season, surpassing Jerry West to become the Lakers player with the most such games in a season not named Kobe Bryant. Such an impact has elevated the Lakers' offense from the middle tier to the league's top field-goal percentage. Initially, one of Dončić's main criticisms was team success. The Western Conference is tough, yet the Lakers went 15-2 in the crucial final month. Although Shai has a better overall record, Dončić's head-to-head performances, such as his 51-point triple-double against the Bulls and his 33-point game against OKC, give the six-time All-Star the edge in many voters' eyes. While Wembanyama is a defensive star and Shai is consistent, neither has led a historic franchise to a 15-2 late-season surge like Dončić. As the season concludes, the point guard's 60-point game in Miami remains a defining moment of the 2025-26 season. If Dončić finishes the final week strongly, the MVP trophy will likely go to Los Angeles.
