Georgia Wins College Baseball Southeastern Conference Series Over Tennessee

The sixth-ranked Georgia Bulldogs claimed the Southeastern Conference series over the 19th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers with a close score of 8-7 earlier today at Foley Field in Athens, Georgia. The three-game weekend series went back and forth between the two ranked programs from start to finish. Tennessee took the first win Friday night with a 7-4 win, but Georgia answered with a 4-2 victory on Saturday before closing out the series today. Georgia improves to 17-4 overall with two wins and one loss in Southeastern Conference play, while Tennessee falls to 14-6 on the season.

The biggest takeaway from today's game was the fact that Georgia had the power to change the game in an instant. In the seventh inning, Tennessee carried a 5-3 lead into the bottom of the frame, until the Bulldogs came back for five runs. Daniel Jackson delivered a run-scoring single that brought home two runners, and teammate and pinch hitter Bryce Calloway followed with a three-run homer to right field to give the Bulldogs an 8-5 lead. In the ninth, Tennessee’s Blake Grimmer hit a leadoff home run to pull within one, but the Bulldogs held firm before Tennessee could surpass them. Georgia and Tennessee are two power programs shaping the 2026 college baseball season, and this past weekend displayed their competitive edge in the Southeastern Conference.

The Tennessee Volunteers built their lead with a strong start in the first three innings. Reese Chapman ripped a two-out double to plate two runs and gave Tennessee an early advantage. Henry Ford extended the lead with a two-run home run in the third inning to push Tennessee ahead by five runs. The Volunteers put up an impressive performance, as Ryan Black went two-for-four on Saturday with his fifth home run and two runs batted in, extending his hitting streak to 12 games and fueling Georgia’s 4-2 win. The contributions from both teams' key players made this Southeastern Conference series a compelling watch of the 2026 college baseball season.

Looking forward, both programs face critical matchups that will define the rest of their season. The Georgia Bulldogs travel to Texas A&M next weekend, then host South Carolina on March 27th through the 29th, with Florida and LSU still ahead, a stretch that will truly test the Bulldogs' abilities. For the Tennessee Volunteers, a home series against Missouri on March 20th through the 22nd will be an opportunity to secure must-win games. Tennessee also has conference matchups against LSU, Ole Miss, and Alabama coming to Knoxville, so the Southeastern Conference standings remain within reach. Both teams have the talent to meet in Omaha this June, and this weekend showed how competitive these matchups can be.
