Giants 31-Year-Old Veteran Punt Returner Out for 2026: How Will Big Blue Forge Ahead?
As of Tuesday evening, the Giants took another blow. Big Blue and their Super Bowl-winning receiver, Braxton Berrios, announced that he will undergo season-ending surgery after leaving Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals with a foot injury. This former Miami hurricane had a lot going for him on this Big Blue team. This wasn't how he wanted his season to end, but it's been an ongoing injury for the last three seasons he's played. Now Big Blue must figure out what it'll do without him.
The New England Patriots drafted Berrios in the sixth round of the 2018 NFL Draft with the 210th pick. The former All-Pro returner built his reputation as a versatile special teams weapon and return specialist. New York wanted him on its roster as a backup. Berrios later spent time with the New York Jets, Miami Dolphins, and Houston Texans before joining the New York Giants in 2026. His experience as both a punt and kick returner gave the Giants a dependable veteran option on special teams.
New York’s new versatile offensive weapon had five kickoff returns for 138 yards and four punt returns. He did not record any receptions in New York. He signed with the NFC East franchise in early June after Gunner Olszewski went on injured reserve. Head coach John Harbaugh has been trying to find the right replacement. Another domino has fallen on special teams, leaving the Giants without a second veteran return option.
The Giants brought him up when they released veteran Odell Beckham Jr. and promoted both Berrios and punt returner Charlie Jones from the practice squad to the active roster. Beckham’s return to familiar colors never quite became the homecoming story it seemed poised to be. Across three appearances, the former Giant’s second chapter ended quietly, with no receptions. That allowed New York to remove him from the picture and gave them more reason to let him go. The move added another layer to the four-time Lombardi Trophy winners’ special-teams arsenal, giving Big Blue two dangerous options that can flip the field in an instant.
His exit may close one chapter, but it barely moves the needle for the NFC East franchise’s receiving corps. Berrios never caught a pass during his time with Big Blue. That makes Malik Nabers, Malachai Fields, and Darnell Mooney key pieces of the puzzle. This team has a backup plan in Jones, who can take over for the former first-team All-Pro. Harbaugh had this plan when his receiver went down, and Jones followed through. The explosive return specialist provided an immediate spark on special teams, ripping off 29 yards on two punt returns before adding another 69 yards across three kickoffs.
The biggest concern the Giants need is return-game stability. This receiver has gotten the ball out every time. Berrios has extensive experience as a return specialist. Every loss forces another adjustment, but the veteran head coach has spent the season staying one move ahead of an ever-changing roster. With the receiver playing only a limited role in the passing game, this latest departure feels less like a devastating blow and more like another vacancy the coaching staff is already prepared to fill.
At the end of the current season, Berrios will hit free agency once again. This player may have the option to return to the Giants, or he may go elsewhere. New York has seen what this top receiver can do. Big Blue has the rest of the season to pull off plenty more wins despite another blow to the offensive line. New York is set to take on the Washington Commanders this coming weekend, and hopefully their replacement can help the NFC division leaders pull off their next win.
