Giants Three-Time Pro Bowl Nose Tackle Traded to the Bengals
The New York football Giants took a major hit to their defensive line. Within the last week, the Giants' defensive tackle, Dexter Lawrence, has requested a trade away from the franchise. He did not wish to play with the team anymore, despite the direction the rebuild was taking. In the last several days, Lawrence and the team have been in negotiations to work something out, but as of today, the three-time Pro Bowl nose tackle has been traded to the Cincinnati Bengals, as per Adam Schefter. In return for this trade, the Giants have now earned themselves a 10th-round pick going into the Thursday night draft.
This trade follows after an impasse on contract extensions between Lawrence and the team. The three-time Pro Bowl nose tackle was drafted in the 2019 NFL Draft by the Giants. He was the 17th overall pick. Coming out of Clemson. He finished his 13,248,048 rookie contract, which included a 7,654,954 signing bonus. The Giants picked up his fifth-year option following this, which was worth $10 million. In 2024, he hit free agency but signed a four-year, $90 million extension. Lawrence attempted to negotiate this offseason to earn more than the $18.5 million he was getting per season in 2026. The negotiations ended without an agreement, leading the three-time Pro Bowler to ask to be traded.
He was a top-tier defensive man for the team and one of the bigger pieces that helped really put the defensive line on a bigger scale than it should have been. Despite injuries, when he did play, he did not let the team down. In 2025, Lawrence played in all 17 regular-season games. He recorded 31 tackles, four tackles for loss, and 0.5 sacks, for pass defenses, and one interception. It was a great year for him and the team, even with the record that they ended the year with.
Now that he has been traded, this has a major impact on the team. It results in them trying to continue to fill the holes in their defensive line. The Giants now need to scramble to figure out how to continue the rebuild. They have done a great job so far; however, they now need a backup plan due to the hole left in the middle of their defensive line. New York will need at least several bodies, but they have others who may be able to cover the openings.
