Has the Bears Pass Rush Picture Changed After a Breakout Campaign?

NFL

The 2025 season was a special year for the Chicago Bears, to say the least. The highlights include winning the NFC North, beating the Green Bay Packers twice, and many thrilling comeback wins. However, the magical season ended with a devastating loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The team now turns its attention to the offseason as it looks to build on this year's success. While there are many holes to fill, all eyes are on how the defense can rebuild after a rough season.

Throughout the entire season, it was clear that the defense was the weakness of the team. During the regular season, Chicago allowed the fourth-most yards per game. Opponents were able to move the ball easily, whether it was through the air or on the ground. It was slightly better in the scoring department, but it was still far from serviceable as they allowed the 10th most points per game. The only saving grace was leading the league in takeaways with 33.

One of the main reasons for the defensive struggle was the lack of pass rush. Despite investing in both Montez Sweat and Dayo Odeyingbo, Chicago very rarely made opposing quarterbacks uncomfortable. When combined with an injured secondary, this was a recipe for disaster. Statistically, Sweat looked solid as he had a team-leading 10 sacks. However, he struggled to provide consistent pressure. Odeyingbo was one of the most disappointing players as he struggled heavily before tearing his Achilles in Week Nine. These two have not lived up to expectations, which leaves the team in major need of a game-changer. Many fans and experts have projected the Bears to be in the market for a top-tier edge rusher this offseason.

Luckily for the Bears, a breakout season by Austin Booker gives them a building block going forward. The former fifth-round pick had a strong preseason, which made fans excited about his future with the team. He then suffered a knee injury, which kept him out until Week Nine. The wait was worth it as he immediately made an impact. In 10 total games, he recorded four and a half sacks. While that does not jump off the page, he brought far more to the team.

This season, the 23-year-old flashed his elite athleticism and great size. His explosiveness is something that not many others on the team have. Additionally, his long arms helped him effectively knock passes down as well. This rare combination is something that can not be taught, which makes him extremely valuable to the Bears. If Chicago can continue to build his technique, then a trio of Booker, Sweat, and Odeyingbo could be solid.

The coaching staff must now decide if it believes in that group's ability. Having limited cap space means that they can not invest heavily in both the pass rush and some of the other holes on the team. Even if the two veterans are not part of the future, the Bears can still build around Booker. With a young, explosive foundation, they may not feel the urgency to overhaul the position. If he is given time, then Booker could grow into the game wrecker that they have been missing.
