How a 26-Year-Old Utility Man Becoming the Rangers Swiss Army Knife Impacts 2026

MLB

The 2026 Texas Rangers lineup has been a question mark since before the season started, and the first year of the Skip Schumaker era is off to a roller coaster start. With the team sitting at 17-21, third in the American League West, there have been a couple of players and moments that are positive takeaways, and one of those players has been Ezequiel Duran. The 26-year-old from the Dominican Republic has been a utility man and on and off the main squad since he was part of a trade that sent Rangers’ fan favorite Joey Gallo to the Yankees, and landed him and fellow teammate Josh Smith in Arlington, TX. What he has accomplished in his short time with the Rangers has been nothing but exceptional, and if he continues, ‘Easy’ will soon become a household name with the Rangers.

Duran has been impressive on both sides of the ball; on an absolute tear over his last seven games, especially his last 15. His ability to produce numbers that are climbing the leaderboards in the American League has been because he’s able to stay on the field, showing his durability and consistency to the team, and in the last 15 games, he’s hitting an average of .370, with an on-base percentage of .455. In his last seven games, he’s averaging .348 at the plate, with an on-base percentage of .448, while batting in five runs, alongside one home run. With the impressive stats in the last two weeks, he’s been one of the more consistent hitters in the Rangers’ batting lineup, recording at least one hit in 12 of his last 15 games, and is riding an overall batting average of .301. He shares a batting average of .300 alongside infielder Josh Jung, and continues to cement himself into the starting lineup in some way, shape, or fashion. The 26-year-old utility man has continued to produce for the anemic Texas Rangers offense, especially with the club struggling to capitalize with runners in scoring position throughout the 2026 season. Duran has been able to find ways to get the ball in play or get on the base path in general, but his teammates haven’t been able to replicate the same effort.

We turn our attention to the defensive side of the ball. He’s been seen as a utility man, a Swiss army knife, or the do-it-all in the infield and outfield for his team. This season, the versatile infielder has appeared at five different positions: 12 games at second base, nine games in left field, six games at third base, five games in right field, and one game at shortstop. His skill and his flexibility not only show the coaches his talent, but more shows his potential can exceed expectations, and what he can provide for his team on a starting basis. Now, while he can play all these positions on a moment's notice, injuries stacking on top of each other have been plaguing the Rangers this season, with the most notable injury being the young star Wyatt Langford, currently sitting on the 10-day injured list.

He was pulled from a game against the Pirates on April 21st this season due to a right forearm strain, and while he was in a rehab game, he felt the lingering injury flare up once more, keeping him off to the side for quite some time. While this is, indeed, a setback for the Rangers as a whole, Duran has been doing great filling in for him and being a reliable asset for the Rangers. All in all, it’ll be exciting for Rangers fans to see what Duran can do as the season progresses, as we continue to witness someone who’s worked his way up and is finally able to show fans and the league what he can bring to the field.
