How a 27-Year-Old Quarterback Can Revitalize His Career in 2026

NFL

Quarterback Justin Fields has had one of the most interesting NFL careers in history. In 2021, the Chicago Bears drafted Fields with the 11th overall pick, making him their quarterback for the future. The former Ohio State Buckeye impressed in college but still had many questions about whether he could make it in the NFL. The 27-year-old became a fan favorite in Chicago but never made the leap the organization hoped for. During his three seasons with the Bears, he was 10-28 as a starter, throwing for 6,674 yards, 40 touchdowns, and 30 interceptions. His running ability was able to earn him second chances with the team to return the following season, but the team ultimately parted ways with Fields following the 2023 season.

Fields played for the next two years with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the New York Jets, seasons in which he was given opportunities to become the long-term starter. Despite having more flashes of success, it once again wasn’t enough to outweigh some of the issues the 27-year-old had that weren’t getting any better. The pocket presence and processing speed have not been able to click so far throughout his career, leaving teams no other option but to look elsewhere for other quarterbacks. There are also plenty of questions as to whether or not these teams set him up for success or if he was doomed to fail from the start. The former Ohio State Buckeye tends to rank in the top half of sacks taken, another key issue that has prevented him from being able to grow as a passer. In the offseason, however, Fields has been given a new opportunity, potentially his best one yet.

The Kansas City Chiefs traded for Fields earlier this year, choosing to serve primarily as a backup and a potential starting spot while quarterback Patrick Mahomes recovers from his torn ACL. On paper, going to a team with one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history isn’t ideal for a player who wants to become a starter, but there’s something to this opportunity that presents far more for the 27-year-old. The potential to learn under Mahomes and head coach Andy Reid is something Fields has sorely needed, as his past coaches have not been able to help him play to his strengths. The Chiefs have consistently been able to win over the years, with their three-time Super Bowl Champion QB at the forefront of the show. The ACL injury has had plenty of time to heal, but there are still some question marks as to whether or not the former Pro Bowler will be 100% by the time the season begins. The 27-year-old not only serves as a great backup option but also as a potential day-one starter if Mahomes is unable to go. While there’s plenty of offseason left to go, Fields becoming a part of the Chiefs is a match made in heaven for his career and future.
