How a Dallas Cowboys 26-Year-Old Wide Receiver Can Be a Difference Maker in 2026

NFL

Last September, the Dallas Cowboys' star wide receiver duo took over the NFL world. CeeDee Lamb and George Pickens emerged as one of the best wide receiver duos in the league, significantly easing the pressure on Dak Prescott, who enjoyed one of the best seasons of his career. While their overall performance was impressive, Pickens unexpectedly stepped up during Lamb's four-week absence due to an ankle injury. With Pickens leading the way, the second wide receiver position was available for Dallas. Ryan Flournoy, the sixth-round draft pick in 2024, stepped up to play ‘Robin’ for Pickens in that short time, and since that moment, he continued his great play even when Lamb returned from injury.

Flournoy, in the four games that Lamb missed, had a career high of 124 receiving yards against the Jets and averaged 51 yards per game. Even when Lamb returned, he maintained solid production, being WR3, recording four touchdowns, and another 100-yard game against the Lions in Detroit. Now having roughly a full year under his belt, Flournoy has earned the trust of Prescott and the coaching staff to be the Cowboys' third receiver. In 2026, the attention will be mainly on Pickens and Lamb, but not focusing on Flournoy will create danger for opposing teams.

The former Southeast Missouri State Redhawk made significant contributions for the Cowboys last year in two key areas: the red zone and third down. Three of Flournoy's four touchdowns were in the red zone, and in the games against the Jets and the Lions, he had key third-down conversions. The focus for other teams is obviously to key in on Lamb and Pickens, even Jake Ferguson, before Flournoy; however, he can use that to his advantage, which he has already done. The key factor contributing to his success is the trust he has earned from Prescott. When Prescott has confidence in a player, he consistently looks to connect with them, and he demonstrated this with Flournoy whenever opportunities arose. The former sixth-round pick is not expected to have an insane season next year, numbers-wise; despite that, when crucial plays arise, it's often the unexpected players who step up. If Flournoy can continue his play in the red zone and on third down and continue to make Prescott believe in him, he can be the one to step up and help tip the scales further in favor of the Cowboys.
