How Can a 25-Year-Old WR Get More Involved in the 2026 Panthers Offense?
At six-foot-three and nearly 230 pounds, Xavier Legette has one of the most intimidating frames in football. Only a handful of wideouts top 220 pounds, but those who do are not nearly as athletically gifted as Legette. The former first-round pick ran a 4.39-second 40-yard dash at the 2024 NFL Combine, proving his rare size-and-speed combination. Legette has every puzzle piece to be a successful WR in the NFL, but he hasn't put them together yet. The former Gamecock has just 84 catches and 860 receiving yards throughout his two-year career; the Panthers need more, and here is how he can get back on track.
It all starts with his role as a true wide receiver. Head coach Dave Canales likes to deploy Legette out wide, as his unrefined route running negates any production in the slot. However, out wide, he struggles to shed coverage because of those route-running nuances. This now begs the question: where would he play if he isn't lined up outside the numbers?
After releasing Jimmy Horn Jr., Carolina now needs a returner and a gadget player. A gadget player is a jack of all trades; they line up in the backfield, are frequently in motion, and see less time on the field. This role fits the 25-year-old Legette to a T. Just because he would be on the field less in a gadget-type role doesn't mean he wouldn't make an impact. For example, Bills gadget receiver Khalil Shakir earned a four-year, $52 million deal last winter due to how impactful he is for Buffalo.
A move to a gadget role would also mean more reps at WR for John Metchie III, another college star who was QB Bryce Young’s favorite target at Alabama. Metchie III signed a one-year, $1.9 million deal with Carolina this offseason. If the Panthers can figure out how to get Legette on the field alongside Metchie III and their top targets, Tetairoa McMillan and Jalen Coker, they could quickly become one of the NFL’s most feared air raids, especially in Week Two in Atlanta. Legette needs to figure things out, and a little tweak to his role could be what he needs.
