How Can the 2026 Panthers Upset the Lions in Week Four?

NFL

For the first time in 10 years, Bank of America Stadium will be hosting a Sunday Night Football game. The last time the Panthers played at home on SNF, backup quarterback Derek Anderson got the start, and Carolina was routed by the Seattle Seahawks 40-7. Only one player from that game remains on the Panthers: long snapper J.J. Jansen. This time, the Detroit Lions come to town in search of their first road win of 2026, a season that has seen them win two games, both by a single score. Here is how a depleted Panthers team can upset the league’s third-highest-scoring offense in Week Four.

Blitz, Blitz, Blitz

Both of Carolina’s starting cornerbacks landed on injured reserve this week: Mike Jackson and Jaycee Horn, meaning fourth-round pick Will Lee III and 27-year-old practice squad journeyman Akayleb Evans will get the start at both boundary spots. This could mean a rampant air raid from Detroit, but if Carolina can strategize a blitz scheme that allows safety help, losing its top two corners could seem less detrimental. Safety Tre’Von Moehrig plays all over the field, but he is best near the line of scrimmage as a big nickel or in the box. He could be used as a constant spy on Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs. Devin Lloyd and Bobby Okereke will need to be ready to abandon assignments and run after Detroit QB Jared Goff, as giving him time will let him dissect the secondary. Edge rusher Jaelan Phillips has been great to start the year, and he must continue that on Sunday. The big-money free-agent signing will face rookie tackle Blake Miller. At Clemson, Miller was terrific in the run game but struggled in pass protection; Phillips needs to take advantage of that.

Bryce Young Needs to Continue His Dominance

Bryce Young currently leads the NFL in passing yards. The former first overall pick is the first QB in Panthers history to do so three games into a season. Young also leads the league in passes of over 25 yards with 11. If he can keep improvising at a high level and find his playmakers, Carolina’s offense will be in a good spot. He will definitely have second-year wideout Tetairoa McMillan by his side, but star wide receiver Jalen Coker has not practiced this week, and his status for Sunday is in doubt. The reigning Offensive Rookie of the Year, McMillan, was quiet in last Sunday’s loss to the Browns. Look for a bounce-back game from him this week. The former Arizona Wildcat will be marked by Detroit’s number one CB, D.J. Reed, who he has more than four inches on – meaning red zone and jump-ball targets are a must.

Use the Energy

When the Panthers backed their way into the playoffs last season, they hosted the Los Angeles Rams. It was the most alive, raucous environment Charlotte had seen in quite some time. This is a Sunday night game, America is watching, and the team needs to feed off of this energy. No starting corners? Use it as motivation. Home underdogs? Prove the sportsbooks wrong. This matchup will tell everyone who the Panthers are. They need to right what went wrong in Week Three and prove to the league and themselves that it has been fixed. Kickoff is set for 8:20 p.m. EST on Sunday in the Queen City.
