How Can the 26-27 Warriors React to a 41-Year-Old Signing with the 76ers?
One of the greatest NBA sagas in recent memory finally came to a halt as of yesterday, ending weeks of anticipation. LeBron James, who announced earlier this summer that he won’t continue his career with the Los Angeles Lakers, entertained a few suitors before ultimately deciding to sign with Philadelphia. The Warriors were initially one of the favorites to land the 41-year-old forward, but fell quite behind in the race in the last week or so. Insiders Shams Charania and Dave McMenamin both reported that the future Hall of Famer was leaning toward a return to the Eastern Conference, and eventually found his new home as a Sixer. With some fans expecting a successful late lunge for James, it’s fair to ask what’s next for Golden State.
Though the team missed out on an opportunity to sign someone who can provide value even at his age, the Warriors may still look to sign another wing. With Cleveland also trying to find another option after failing to reunite with James, both teams have begun looking overseas. More specifically, according to Charania, the two 2015 finalists are assessing the option of Mario Hezonja. The 31-year-old Croatian international has spent the last six seasons with Real Madrid, featuring as one of their most productive players. He led them to one EuroLeague and two Spanish League trophies in his time there, but seems ready for a return to the NBA. Hezonja offers a different pursuit than the all-time leader in games played, and presents himself as a much cheaper and potentially rewarding option.
Another name that has swirled in rumors involving Golden State is Demar DeRozan. The six-time all-star hasn’t publicly had a look from Mike Dunleavy’s front office, but it’s a possible replacement that would make sense. Given that the Warriors are all in now, and despite DeRozan’s career being close to its end, his 17 seasons of experience combined with a still versatile skill set could find value in the Bay. At 36 years old, he played 77 games with Sacramento last season and averaged just over 18 points per game with an above-career-average 49% shooting. Following his release by the Kings, it's safe to assume that the Compton native will not seek an overly large salary.
With the offseason now in full swing, the Warriors are not yet done with making roster moves. After bringing back a few players like Kristaps Porzingis, Golden State still needs to improve their backcourt. A consistent scorer should be at the top of the priority list, and the two players mentioned above certainly check that box. As more concrete reporting releases over the next few weeks, don’t be surprised if one of the two athletes mentioned above wears the black and gold in the upcoming NBA campaign.
