How Do the Chicago Bears Stack Up Against the NFC North in 2026?
The NFC North is expected to be one of the NFL’s most competitive divisions once again in 2026. Every team has made moves to improve its roster, setting up another tightly contested race. Chicago has positioned itself to compete, but it’ll face plenty of challenges from their division rivals. Talent is spread across all four teams, making every matchup feel even more significant. With that in mind, here’s a closer look at where they stand compared to the rest of the division entering the new season.
Green Bay Packers
One of the most historic rivalries in football is set to once again headline the battle for the NFC North. These two teams have always had intense games, but this past season took it to the next level. They finished as the top two teams in the division and met each other in the playoffs, where the Bears ultimately emerged victorious. Although Green Bay has been able to make the playoffs frequently, it has not been able to make the deep runs it had hoped for. Heading into 2026, they have their eyes on figuring out a way to win the division, return to form, and get back to the Super Bowl. Luckily, they have a strong team built to achieve that goal.
Led by Jordan Love, the Packers' offense has a ton of potential. Their receiver room is young but has a lot to prove. Their defense is set to look strong, as the hope is that when Micah Parsons returns, they will become one of the top units in the league. When comparing the two teams, they feel fairly similar. The Bears' offense is more explosive and led by the creative system of Ben Johnson. However, the defense is another story. Green Bay's defense has much more proven talent and players capable of taking over the game. It seems very likely that these two teams will enter the season as the favorites to win the division, which puts even more on the line when the two historic franchises match up.
Detroit Lions
While those first two teams were the top in 2025, the Detroit Lions are set to make teams remember them this season. Since Jared Goff has stepped up his game, they have turned around the franchise. Last season was a bit of a down year, where they went 9-8. However, the talent that they have leaves little doubt that they should be able to rebound in 2026. Their offense, led by Amon-Ra St. Brown and Jahmyr Gibbs, is arguably the most talented in the league and has proven that they can keep pace with any team. Aidan Hutchinson leads a defense that has talent across all levels but just needs to find a way to pull it all together.
Chicago has proven it is full of young talent that has a bright future. However, they need to find a way to build on their success. That is where the issue is when compared to the Lions, who have proven coaching and talent that have produced their entire careers. Additionally, the firepower that Detroit has on offense should scare any team. Last season, they won both games between the two teams, and 2026 could potentially see the same result. It feels like these two have similar talent levels, and it would not be a surprise to see either one win the division. Add in the Packers to that mix, and you have three teams that are all on the same level, and that could realistically see deep playoff runs.
Minnesota Vikings
The Minnesota Vikings may be the most interesting team in this division. Just like the other three teams, they are full of talent. Justin Jefferson is one of the best players in the league and leads a receiver trio capable of dominating next season. Their defense has serious talent, but also has some major holes, like in the secondary. However, the coaching helps cover that up. With Kevin O’Connell leading the team and Brian Flores in charge of the defense, there are very few teams that have a better structure in place. The major issue for them is that they do not have a proven quarterback. That very well could hold them back, but even just solid play could elevate them to the next level.
The biggest advantage that the Vikings have is coaching. Every year, they have been able to outperform expectations. Their offensive weapons are elite and far more proven than most other teams'. It can be argued that Chicago has better young talent and fewer holes, but they have not yet proven they can sustain their success. The talent gap here feels larger than it does for the Packers or Lions, but it is still far closer than most other divisions have.
All four teams have a legitimate chance to win the division. Detroit has an elite offense and plenty of talent on defense. Green Bay is also full of talent and is never easy to beat. Minnesota has one of the best groups of wide receivers in the league and elite coaching on both sides of the ball. Chicago can certainly hang with all three, and their young talent means that we have no idea how high their ceiling is. The path to winning the NFC North is not easy, as few other divisions have more talent spread across all four teams. This should put them around finishing as the second or third best team in the division, due to their lack of improvement on defense. However, the Bears have the skill to survive the gauntlet in 2026 and remain on top of one of the best divisions in football.
