How Interceptions Are Driving the Bears Momentum

NFL

It is no secret that the Chicago Bears' defense has struggled this season. They allow the seventh most points per game and the sixth most yards per game. There has also been very little pressure and sack production by the team. However, the defense still has a role in the Bears' success. Chicago currently leads the league in takeaways. This season, they have forced 22 turnovers, 15 of which are interceptions. It is more than just a hot streak; it’s a part of the team's identity.

As a result of this new identity, this defense has three players who rank near the top of the league in interceptions. Safety Kevin Byard has five, which leads the entire league. It is also tied for the second most he has had in a single season. Linebacker Tremaine Edmunds has recorded four, which is tied for the second most. Additionally, there is one major surprise. Cornerback Nahshon Wright, who only played in one game last year, also has four interceptions, including one that he returned for a touchdown in Week One. While the defense has not been consistent, these three have been leading the charge in the turnover department.

The most encouraging part is that the Bears have done this without their top two cornerbacks. Jaylon Johnson, arguably their best player on the whole team, has only played in one game. Kyler Gordon has also been severely limited, as he has only appeared in two games. Both of them are nearing returns, which could set up the secondary nicely. There is no guarantee of what a healthy secondary offers, but it certainly raises the ceiling of the defense. Gaining more talent back should lead to an increase in all aspects of the defense, especially in the interception department. It may be enough to make Chicago a serious playoff contender this season.

Turnovers have been a key to winning each game this season. Chicago is winning the turnover battle every week, as with the 22 takeaways, they have only turned the ball over six times. This comes out to a positive swing of 16, which is six more than the next closest team. Winning this battle is one of the keys that a team usually relies on to win the game. The fact that the Bears control it boosts their odds of winning regardless of the defensive struggles.

It is yet to be seen if this pace is realistic for the whole season. However, it has held up so far. Combining turnovers with a soon-to-be healthy secondary could solidify the defense. Finding a way to turn into at least an average unit goes a long way with how well the offense has been playing this season. With the opportunistic defense setting the tone, Chicago can turn the hype and momentum into continued success.
