How McLaren Can Repeat Their Championship Run in 2026
After almost three decades of being passed up, McLaren finally has their chance to once again sit at the top of Formula One. The 2024 season saw them capture their first Constructors’ Championship since 1998, ending years of frustration and near misses. They followed that achievement with another title the next year, reinforcing their return to dominance. At the same time, Lando Norris secured the team’s first Drivers’ Championship since 2008, marking a historic moment for both the driver and the organization. For a team that once defined Formula One success in the late 20th century, the return to championship form felt long overdue. However, this resurgence did not happen overnight. McLaren spent several seasons rebuilding its competitiveness, particularly from 2022 onwards, when the team began steadily improving its car performance, race strategy, and overall consistency. The recent championships, therefore, feel less like a surprise and more like the result of years of disciplined development and persistence. Now, with two Constructors’ titles and a Drivers’ title in hand, McLaren enters the 2026 season determined to defend its position at the top of the sport.
Preseason testing brought plenty of speculation across the paddock. No team openly claimed to be the fastest, but McLaren’s performance drew attention as they consistently appeared among the quickest teams throughout testing. While testing times are not always a perfect indicator of race pace, their reliability and speed suggested that the team had carried its strong momentum into the new year. The real answer will come once the lights go out at the season-opening Grand Prix, but there are already promising signs. Oscar Piastri, in particular, impressed early by topping the charts during the second practice session for the Australian Grand Prix.
Dominating the entire season the way they did last year may be challenging, as the field has grown increasingly competitive; however, McLaren appears well-positioned to remain a leading contender during the opening races. Yet, McLaren’s drivers remain highly motivated. Norris, the reigning champion, leads the team, while Piastri is eager to prove he can compete for titles. Coupled with a strong engineering team and confidence from recent championships, McLaren is well-positioned to continue its success.
