How Realistic is a Knicks Trade for the Bucks Star?

NBA

As a Knicks fan, the idea of Giannis Antetokounmpo in orange and blue feels like something out of a dream. He’s a two-time MVP, NBA Champion, and the kind of franchise-altering superstar that instantly changes the narrative around any organization. Which is especially needed amongst these current New York Knicks. Over the past few seasons, Knicks fans have been deceived by hope, only to watch big-name stars land elsewhere. From LeBron James in 2010 to Donovan Mitchell just two years ago, the “almost” moments have stacked up.

However, now, whispers of Giannis wanting a fresh start have resurfaced, and the Knicks, with their treasure chest of assets and big-market appeal, are once again in the conversation. From a trade standpoint, the Knicks actually have the assets to make a compelling offer. They could package a mix of tremendous role players and salary fillers like Mikal Bridges and Mitchell Robinson. That’s without even touching Jalen Brunson, who should be considered untouchable. If Giannis were to even hint that he wants out, and that New York is on his list, the Bucks would be smart to at least pick up the phone.

The Knicks can outbid most teams without completely gutting their core, which hasn’t been the case in past superstar hunts. However, let’s talk realistically. Would Giannis actually want to come to New York? On paper, it’s easy to say yes. MSG, the media capital of the world, a rising team, and a loyal fan base dying for a championship. Yet, Giannis has always been wired differently. He’s never cared much for the spotlight, preferring a quieter life in Milwaukee where he can work, win, and go home. The bright lights and big billboards were never much of an appeal for him. For the Knicks to become a serious option, they would have to guarantee Giannis a team that, at the very least, can make another conference finals appearance next season. That’s a tall task, but not impossible with the current momentum.

In short, the Giannis-to-Knicks scenario isn’t likely, yet. However, it’s not out of reach either. Knicks fans have every reason to keep one eye on Milwaukee and hope for the right mix of playoff pressure and front office panic to open a door. It’s a long shot, but this time, the Knicks actually have the ammo and infrastructure to pounce if the opportunity comes. They’ve been laughed at before for dreaming too big, but in 2025, this dream might not be so far-fetched. If it ever becomes a reality, the Garden will explode like never before.
