How the 2026 Red Sox Clinched a Playoff Berth
The 2026 Red Sox are officially going to October. In some ways, it’s a shame the postseason trip wasn't secured with a victory. Boston benefited from another squad’s loss and some convenient math. If this team has taught us anything, though, it’s that the road to success is not always straightforward. That doesn’t mean it’s not worth taking.
The nine-time World Series champions played an afternoon game, the final road matchup of the year, unsure of their fate. They lost 5-1 to the Rays and promptly checked in on the rest of the league. A little while later, the future became clearer: the Astros fell to the Braves, meaning that Beantown could no longer be mathematically eliminated. While the seeding is not yet finalized, a rematch of the 2025 Wild Card Series is almost certain, with the Sox traveling to the Bronx to take on the Yankees. Before that happens, before even the final regular season games happen, a celebration was in order. Players donned commemorative T-shirts and sprayed champagne around the visiting locker room. A skeptic might call this display unnecessary, an overreaction to news long in coming. That said, after another look at the incredible sequence of events that got us here, I’m sure the cynic would reach for champagne too.
On June 24th, Boston was 32-46 and had a nine percent chance of making the playoffs. They had been dealt one brutal blow after another: an unfathomably poor start, a total reset of their coaching staff, and injuries to some of their best stars. Yet interim manager Chad Tracy insisted brighter days were ahead. Remarkably, he was right. The team made history with one of its longest winning streaks ever, amid a 31-5 summer run. Previously unknown role players became must-see TV. Struggling pitchers threw their best-ever games. Fenway Park, quiet through the tough spring, turned back into raucous baseball heaven. Whatever comes next, the most improbable race has already been won. It is hard enough to play a long, successful season, gradually inching closer to your autumn goals. It’s another thing entirely to face the worst kind of sports despair and refuse to let it endure. I say every bit of celebration is earned.
