How the Bears Can Fix Pass Rushing Issues in 2026
The Chicago Bears have officially finished the preseason and are just under two weeks away from the regular season. Chicago made a return to the playoffs for the first time since 2020, hoping to begin a new era under head coach Ben Johnson. Offensively, the Bears are loaded with young talent, including quarterback Caleb Williams, wide receiver Rome Odunze, and tight end Colston Loveland. Historically, the offense has never been the main focus for the organization, which has been built on an elite defense every year. However, 2026 may be the first year in a long time the Bears will have a much better offense in comparison to the defense. The main issue on the defensive side of the ball is the pass-rushing attack.
Defensive coordinator Dennis Allen will be entering his second season in Chicago, looking to have a much better-performing defensive squad in comparison to last year. In 2025, the Bears ranked 29th overall in total defensive yards allowed, with an average of 361 yards a game. They also ranked just 22nd overall in sacks, earning 35 total. Chicago’s defensive line was headlined by Montez Sweat, who will once again return this year as their big name in the pass-rushing attack. Alongside him will be edge rushers Dayo Odeyingbo and Austin Booker. Odeyingbo is going into his second season with Chicago, looking to make his three-year, $48 million contract worth it. Booker is entering his third season, looking to break out with the potential for plenty of snaps this year. Chicago just traded Gervon Dexter Sr. to the Atlanta Falcons, leaving more concern about the current state of the pass-rushing attack. Fortunately for the Bears, they may have an intriguing option before the trade deadline.
Chicago will potentially have the opportunity to acquire edge rusher Maxx Crosby around the trade deadline. The Las Vegas Raiders aren’t expected to be much of a playoff team this season, and after the events this offseason that took place with Crosby, he could very well be available during the midpoint of the year. The Bears were in the mix for acquiring the star pass rusher earlier this year, but were unable to strike a deal. Considering their current defensive line issues did not improve from last season, it’s safe to assume they will be back in the market later in the season, especially if they are in playoff contention. The former Pro Bowler would more than help Chicago’s defensive line and potentially be the star they need to win a Super Bowl title.
