How the Knicks Fast-Paced Offense Could Unlock Their Full Potential
After making the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time in 25 years, the Knicks are gearing up for another successful season and a deep playoff run. If the Knicks want to capitalize on a weakened Eastern Conference, they'll have to find a way to utilize their roster best. One of the most important players is Mikal Bridges. After waiting for Mikal from the Brooklyn Nets, expectations were high for Mikal to have a career year.
One of the things that hindered Mikal in the 2024-2025 season was being asked to double-team and help in the paint because Karl-Anthony Towns is not a stellar defender. Due to KAT's defensive shortcomings, Mikal and OG Anunoby were invited to take on more defensive responsibility. They managed to hold their own thanks to OG's strength and Mikal's wingspan, helping them guard larger players. With the Knicks now able to run a double big lineup with a healthy Mitchell Robinson, Mikal won't be asked to help guard the paint as consistently. He's free to use his length and wingspan to focus on protecting the perimeter and mid-range specialists.
Mikal is a fantastic two-way player who can have high-impact moments on both sides of the ball. His offensive peak was shown when he averaged 26 points as the best player on the Brooklyn Nets. His defensive peak was displayed when he was the runner-up for the Defensive Player of the Year and made the All-Defensive First Team. If Mike Brown can find a way to get him back to his peak, then that could be the final piece to pushing this team to the finals.
Mike Brown has informed the media that he plans to run a fast-paced offense this season. Instead of relying heavily on Jalen Brunson to carry the offense, the focus will be on ball movement and passing in transition. Mikal can thrive in this offense thanks to his wingspan for his position. Mikal has a wingspan of seven-feet-one, and his shot has improved after having a slump at the start of last season. His shot will be more reliable since he won't change his shooting form again. The fast-paced offense means he'll get touches against weak defenders, allowing him to drive in the paint.
