How the New York Giants 2025 Fourth-Round Pick Could Reshape the Run Game in 2026

NFL

Giants head coach John Harbaugh has a lot to work with this coming season in the Big Apple. After having an amazing draft, he and the Giants still came up short in the running back market. However, it’s not as bad as everyone thinks. The Giants have various decent running backs on their roster. Though if Harbaugh keeps up the franchise's offseason moves, running back Cam Skattebo may be the guy for a breakout season this year, provided he comes back bigger and better than ever.

Season Interrupted: The Injury That Changed Everything

Last season was cut short because he suffered a dislocated ankle in Week Eight against the Philadelphia Eagles. Previously, this running back was working to ensure Big Blue had a shot at touchdowns during the season. This 2025 fourth-round draft pick was making a rather huge difference on the field so that New York could make something of themselves again. Skattebo has spent a lot of time healing and making sure he is ready to return to Big Blue when training camps begin in August.

What Could Have Been: A Breakout Season on Pause

Last season, he pulled in 101 attempted yards, 4.1 yards per carry, scored five touchdowns, and totaled 410 yards. If the red zone regulator had continued to play last season, there is a good chance that he might have had a 1,000-yard or more season. The no-nonsense chain mover has always been one of the strongest members on the team, and he has always been a straight runner. This running back has never been a zigzag type of runner. With him coming back, New York may see more of him than they have before.

Built in the Trenches: New Protection, New Possibilities

The former Sun Devil will have new protection this coming season. Since the team added players such as offensive tackle Francis Mauigoa and J.C. Davis, it’s going to be scary to watch these three work together to put points on the board. The Giants' new offensive coach, Matt Nagy, has revamped many of the team's playbooks. He has taken the time to work on the red zone, an area that New York has struggled in for a while. Nagy wants Skattebo to be the one to pull off those breakthroughs and get the touchdowns that the Giants have been missing in the last several seasons.

Red Zone Weapon: The Touchdown Factor

New York's no-frills offensive weapon was also the guy last season who took on 80 percent of the five-yard line touchdowns. Another area where New York has struggled for several years. The Giants liked what they saw in him, and moving forward, he is going to have an even better season than they have had in the previous years. ‘SkattPack’ will be back in action, and all these pieces put together, the team could possibly pull off a playoff season for the Giants. Skattebo will be one of the main reasons why it happens right alongside quarterback Jaxson Dart. Things can only go up from here in New York.
