How the SEC Is Dominating Women’s College Basketball
The SEC conference is a terrifying force to be reckoned with year after year. The teams that make up this conference are notorious for high-level basketball and the superstars they produce. Household names like Aja Wilson, Angel Reese, and Aliyah Boston owe part of their success to their time in the SEC battling against fierce competition. Women’s basketball players in the SEC all strive for greatness so that one day they can write their names in the history books.
Setting the Standard Since 1932
The SEC, or Southeastern Conference, was formed 94 years ago by schools looking to leave their current conferences for something new. From there, a dynasty was built. The SEC houses 16 schools and competes in sports at the Division One level. They are known for their competitive football, basketball, and volleyball programs, among other sports. In the past year, 10 schools represented the SEC in the NCAA women’s basketball tournament. In 2025, Texas A&M volleyball won the national title with a sweep of Kentucky who also plays in the SEC. Football teams like Alabama and Texas usually dominate as well. The power and prestige of the programs making up the Southeastern Conference will lead them to be champions for years to come.
Looking Back at the 2025 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament
The 2025 SEC basketball tournament was held in South Carolina from March 5th to 9th. The first round of games started with Tennessee getting the win over Texas A&M and Mississippi State beating Missouri. In the second round, 11th-ranked Florida got the upset against sixth-ranked Alabama. The quarterfinals brought another upset with Oklahoma getting the win over Kentucky. Finally, there were four teams remaining. South Carolina defeated Oklahoma, and Texas defeated LSU, punching their tickets to the SEC Tournament Championship. South Carolina ended their regular season with a win over Texas, 64-45, and claimed another Conference Championship. South Carolina continues to be a force in the SEC and looks to gain another title in March.
The Future Is the SEC
This season, the NCAA women’s basketball top 10 rankings consist of five SEC teams. There are nine SEC teams in the top 25. The dominance that this conference accomplishes comes from a few things: good coaching, smart recruiting, and dedicated fan bases. Coaches like Kim Mulkey, Dawn Staley, and Vic Schaefer set high standards for their athletes and push them to be better. Being a good coach will make future recruits want to join your squad and make the team better. The SEC is also known for having dedicated fans who show up to every game and support their teams in any way they can. This is part of what makes the conference so competitive and high-spirited. The SEC is in good hands for years to come.
