How Will the Women’s Euro Championship Play Out?

After Spain’s win against Germany yesterday in the UEFA Women’s Euro Semi-Finals, many wonder how Spain will battle against England. England and Spain’s Women’s National Teams are not strangers. They played against each other back in Australia during the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and twice already this year in the UEFA Women’s Nations League. Many are not shocked that Spain and England are the two to come out victorious during the UEFA Euro Semi-Finals, but who has the possibility of winning in this tournament remains to be the big question.

Based on their previous performances, England’s game against Italy proved frustrating for them. As Italy held possession for most of the game, England grew messy and increasingly aggressive in the second half, but luckily, they were able to change their tone of play and gain two goals thanks to two substitutes, Michelle Agyemang and Chloe Kelly. Spain’s game against Germany on Wednesday was different. Both teams maintained a consistent tone of play, keeping their aggression high and breakaways clean; however, Spain maintained more control of the game as they continuously made plays into the penalty box, hoping for a win. Luckily, with the extra time added, Spain’s Aitana Bonmati scored a beautiful cross, earning Spain a ticket to the Championship. Nonetheless, how will these previous performances tell us who will win on Sunday?

Currently, Spain is favored to win. Spain’s consistency is dangerous. They worked together as a group and matched Germany’s speed well. Many are eager to see if Bonmati or Esther González will score another amazing goal. The way this team has proved they can work under pressure with fast breaks, in or near the penalty box, is something England will have to watch out for. If Spain can win this Sunday, this will be their first win in the UEFA Women’s Euro Championship. On the other hand, England will have to defend their title as previous Euro Champions and prove that their through passes and defense are enough to beat Spain and help them maintain their title. Their defenders stand out the most, with Lucy Bronze, Alex Greenwood, and Leah Williamson being the consistent back-line for England within this tournament, proving that they can continuously demonstrate their strength and speed. Overall, based on their previous history and the excitement they have created thus far, Sunday’s game will truly be a sight to see and one that will continue the rivalry between Spain and England Women’s Soccer.
