Instant Impact: How Week One Freshman Could Shape the Season

Week One of the college football season introduced a new crop of talent. From polished quarterbacks to electric wide receivers, this freshman class dominated Week One. These true freshmen took over Week One and revealed their potential to become future stars. With Week One in the past, these freshmen proved they can win games for their team and are ones to keep an eye on for the rest of the season.

Jaron-Keawe-Sagapolutele

Cal's lefty standout threw three touchdowns in a win over Oregon State. Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele completed 20/30 passes and totaled 234 yards in the air. He received ACC Rookie of the Week for his breakthrough performance in his debut. With Sagapolutele shining at QB, Cal could be a dark horse as the season goes on.

Bryce Underwood

Highly anticipated debut for the number one recruit in his class, and he lived up to expectations. Bryce Underwood threw for one touchdown and 251 yards in a 34-17 win over New Mexico. Handling the Week One pressure well, Underwood will be tested in a road game versus the number 18-ranked Oklahoma. Michigan's playoff hopes are now in the hands of the true freshman.

Malik Washington

The Maryland native earned Big Ten freshman of the week after throwing for 258 yards and three touchdowns. The Terps demolished Florida Atlantic, and Washington was a huge reason. Malik Washington's strong arm and quick decision-making are going to be a problem for opposing defenses. The true freshman shone in his debut and will be one to watch moving forward and coming out of the Big Ten.

Malachi Toney

At just 17, Malachi Toney led the team in receiving yards after catching six passes for 82 yards. Toney also found the endzone in the Hurricanes tight win over Notre Dame. After being tested against a solid Notre Dame team, Toney proved he belongs at just 17 years old. This young star's route-running and speed will help Miami win games and give them a shot at competing in January.

Vernell Brown III

This record-breaking young star took the spotlight with an unreal one-handed 41-yard catch and totaled 79 receiving yards in his debut. Along with catching passes, Vernell Brown III was a threat on special teams, returning three punts and one kick, for 70 yards total. The young star set a program record for receiving yards in a debut by a true freshman. The explosive, speedy freshman is bound to explode for the Gators and become a reliable receiver and on special teams.
