Is a 24-Year-Old Quarterback the Most Famous Cleveland Brown in Over 60 Years?

NFL

Although the franchise has arguably been one of the worst in North American professional sports since the turn of the century, the Cleveland Browns have a long and storied history. The team’s namesake and founding head coach, Paul Brown, is largely responsible for the modernization of American football. Brown was integral in putting microphones in helmets, battling racism by paving the way for Black athletes, and in how players studied and practiced the game. Under Brown’s leadership from 1946 to 1962, Cleveland won nearly 170 games, four AAFC titles, and three NFL Championships. The success was largely due to the franchise's most recognizable names: the legendary running back Jim Brown and one of football’s founding fathers at the quarterback position, Otto Graham. Ask any NFL historian, and they’ll tell you that Brown and Graham are the most famous players to ever put on the White and Orange for Cleveland. However, a new poster boy is emerging in Northeast Ohio.

Currently turning heads with his minicamp play, Sheduer Sanders is one of the most recognizable names and faces in all of professional football. It’s not just that his dad, Deion Sanders, is incredibly famous, but the 24-year-old has already made a name of his own. From his combative nature against opponents and naysayers to his rap songs, the ‘Young King’ revels in the spotlight. What Cleveland fans love about Sanders the most is his personality. The moxy and attitude of the former Colorado Buffalo is a lot like what the Dawg Pound got with Baker Mayfield just a few years ago. If Sanders can capitalize on a newly loaded roster and a new head coach in Todd Monken, who seems to be giving the 24-year-old a legitimate shot, then the popularity will only go up if the on-field product does as well.

As for the question if Sanders is the most popular Cleveland player since Brown and Graham, the answer might be yes, just one season into his tenure. Since the 1960’s, the Browns have fielded fan favorites like Bernie Kosar, Joe Thomas, Jamal Lewis, and even college football stars like Johnny Manziel and Brady Quinn, who did not succeed in the pros, not even to the level of the ‘Young King’ in his rookie season. Although Kosar and Thomas were absolutely brilliant, they never seized the national spotlight that the 2025 Pro Bowl quarterback already has. It’s crazy to put them all in the same breath, but in terms of popularity, Sanders is on the path to being on the same pedestal as Graham and Brown.
