Is a Former Georgia Standout Getting Overlooked on the 2026 Falcons?

NFL

Falcons fans love their Georgia boys. The selection of wide receiver Zachariah Branch had the fanbase excited, despite Branch being a late-third-round pick. So, how hasn’t Atlanta’s first-round pick from the 2025 NFL Draft received any offseason love? Linebacker and South Carolina native Jalon Walker may have fallen under the radar. Still, the signs of improvement for his sophomore season are already bearing fruit with the flashes he showed during his rookie year.

Walker, as stated before, has flown under the radar not only during the Falcons' hectic offseason but also during his rookie campaign. The Georgia prospect racked up five-and-a-half sacks, along with two forced fumbles and 36 total tackles as a rookie. Not eye-popping numbers by any means, but the 22-year-old was playing at both edge rusher and an off-ball linebacker as defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich was trying to find the right spot for him. His impact wasn’t shown on the stat sheet, however. Despite being a rookie, the former Bulldogs linebacker flashed his versatility and athleticism when setting the edge. He was fantastic for the Atlanta defense against the run. Although the production seemed modest stat-wise, the Walker graded out very well analytically. According to Pro Football Focus, the 22-year-old graded out with a 71.6 overall grade, ranking 40th out of the 115 edge rushers that were graded. In comparison, his teammate and fellow 2025 first-round pick James Pearce received a 56.2 overall grade despite finishing third in the Defensive Rookie of the Year voting.

You’d think that Walker would be the talk of the town, but his hype has been overshadowed by what can best be described as “offseason drama”. For starters, the aforementioned Pearce has been prominent in the media for all the wrong reasons. Currently dealing with multiple felony charges, the status of whether he will suit up for the Falcons this upcoming season is still completely up in the air. The contractual decisions with Atlanta’s most prominent offensive weapons have also drawn attention away from the sophomore linebacker. Drake London recently got paid, but Bijan Robinson and Kyle Pitts still haven’t received their extensions yet, and Pitts may not even get one at all. The most important position in football is quarterback. Safe to say, there are a lot of question marks with both of the Falcons potential signal callers in 2026. The amalgamation of stories has made the potential leap of Walker’s defensive production seem rather mundane in comparison. Big things are in store for the outside linebacker, according to ESPN analyst Matt Miller. “Walker’s talent and versatile usage should combine for a double-digit sack season in his sophomore campaign,” wrote Miller when talking about Walker and his potential sophomore leap. With the Falcons' relatively quiet offseason and Pearce’s potential suspension, the former Bulldog will need to step up in a big way for that emerging Dirty Birds’ defense.
