Is T-City Ready for a New Challenge in the Lightweight Division?

UFC

Brian Ortega is entering an interesting transition in his career as he is jumping up to the Lightweight Division. At UFC 326, which is set for March 7th, Ortega will face Renato Moicano for his first match in his new division. This is a pivotal moment in the 34-year-old's career, and switching divisions is a high-risk but high-reward move. Many are excited to see how this works out for T-City.

While a jump to the Lightweight Division could be difficult, it could be exactly what Brian Ortega needs. While he was near the top of the Featherweight Division, there were still many difficulties. Ortega was a larger featherweight, making his weight cuts physically taxing. Along with injuries that forced him to take time off, he is looking for something new. This move to the Lightweight Division will allow him to fight closer to his natural size, allowing him to give full attention to his training, rather than making weight. Fans can expect to see improved cardio and more power behind his elite striking. This also opens opportunities for Ortega to confidently exchange with his opponent rather than looking for a comeback later in the fight. However, there are many challenges to come. The Lightweight Division is extremely unforgiving and has talent everywhere. Ortega’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is elite; however, these opponents will be bigger and stronger. Ortega should look to take full advantage of this jump in weight and look to put on some size before his fight in March. Rental Moicano has also made the jump from the Featherweight Division and has established himself as one of the Lightweight Division's all-around threats. Both fighters have elite striking and a precise ground game, setting up to be a very exciting fight.

This could be a redefining moment in Brian Ortega’s career, as many are hopeful he finds more comfort in this new division. He has incredible skill that can be very well displayed in the Lightweight Division, making this what could be a very smart move. Putting on size and increasing the intensity of his training will also help. Regardless, the future looks exciting and bright for T-City.
