Is the Bears Franchise QB the Most Clutch Quarterback in His Division?

NFL

The Chicago Bears took down the New York Giants, 24-20, in an impressive come-from-behind win to move to 6-3 on the season. The Bears’ record hasn’t been seen since 2018, marking their best start to a season in seven years. Despite quarterback Jaxson Dart and the Giants holding a 10-point lead in the fourth quarter, Chicago wouldn’t back down and score 14 unanswered points. Dart would leave the fourth quarter with a concussion, providing the Bears’ defense the opportunity to find some response against the Giants’ offense, which had been cruising down the field all game. Offensively, Chicago woke up in the final 10 minutes after going quiet the entire game after their touchdown in the first quarter. Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was the star of the show and led his fourth game-winning drive this season.

Williams threw for 220 yards, a touchdown, and zero turnovers. Chicago would suffer six drops by their wide receivers during the game, the most by one team in a game this season, potentially taking away a 300-yard passing game for Williams. Despite this, the former USC quarterback took matters into his own hands in the final minute of the game and delivered a 17-yard touchdown run to take the lead. Before that touchdown, he would find wide receiver Rome Odunze for a touchdown after leading his team down the field to provide them the opportunity to get another drive. Williams has now had back-to-back games with winning drives to continue to push his team towards a playoff spot. Bears fans have been waiting for their quarterback to show why he was chosen number one overall in an impressive draft class, and may now be able to say he’s the most clutch at his position in the NFC North.

Last season, Williams would lead multiple potential game-winning drives that were ultimately taken away from a variety of factors. Ranging from the heartbreaking Hail Mary to the blocked field goal against their rival, Williams has always played his best brand of football in the fourth quarter. In his career stats all-time in the fourth quarter, he has thrown for 1,686 yards and 14 touchdowns. The wins may not have come last season, but now, under head coach Ben Johnson, they are beginning to pile up. Chicago is now 6-1 in its last seven games, proving that it can come back from any deficit. NFL teams going up against Williams and the Bears now know they can’t count the quarterback out until the final whistle blows.
