Is the Bengals New Signing the Key to a Stronger Season?
As of Thursday, August 28th, 2025, the Cincinnati Bengals officially signed free agent Dalton Risner. Coming out of a successful collegiate career at Kansas State University, Risner was originally the Denver Broncos’ second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He signed a one-year contract with the Minnesota Vikings in 2023 and officially resigned on May 31st, 2024. For Cincinnati, this signing addresses a lingering concern on the offensive line. Protecting Joe Burrow has been one of the top priorities since he entered the league, but injuries and inconsistencies in the trenches have often left the offense one-dimensional. By adding a veteran like Risner, the Bengals are hoping that his experience and toughness will bring stability to the right guard position.
Despite entering his seventh NFL season, Risner has shown a great deal of enthusiasm for contributing to his team. Head coach Zac Taylor praised his readiness and enthusiasm to commit to Cincinnati, expressing optimism that, in spite of not being with a team in the offseason, Risner could be prepared to suit up for Week One against the Cleveland Browns. Cincinnati has long been notorious for having a shaky offensive line, but Risner’s reputation as a physical and reliable blocker precedes him. His skill set aligns with the Bengals’ vision of building a sturdier interior line, and fans are eager to see a veteran presence finally bring stability to the trenches. Risner’s arrival signals a clear commitment to protecting Joe Burrow at a consistently high level, something many have viewed as the missing piece in Cincinnati’s championship formula.
Risner’s ability to adapt quickly to new environments is one of his most valuable skills, beyond his physical attributes. His adaptability could aid him in building quick chemistry with his new teammates. At last week’s workout, the Bengals’ coaching staff was evidently impressed by what they observed. His efforts at the workout dispelled any concerns they may have had surrounding his physical condition, as he hadn’t been in an NFL training camp.
Still, the questions remain. How quickly will Risner’s adaptability translate into on-field chemistry with his new teammates? Can he maintain his physical condition and stay healthy through a full season despite missing training camp? Most importantly, will his veteran presence and blocking ability be enough to finally solidify Cincinnati’s offensive line against the AFC’s toughest defense fronts? Ultimately, the Bengals’ decision to sign Risner represents both a calculated risk and potentially season-defining reward. If he can maintain his health, build chemistry quickly, and live up to his reputation as a reliable force in the trenches, Cincinnati may finally have the stability up front that has eluded them in recent years. For Joe Burrow and the Bengals’ explosive offense, that protection could be the difference between another promising season and a true championship run.
