Is the Chiefs Left Tackle Job Already Decided?

NFL

The Chiefs entered training camp with one of the biggest question marks on their offensive line: who would start at left tackle? After weeks of competition and evaluation, rookie Josh Simmons appears to be taking control of the job. The first-round pick has taken the majority of first-team reps and has impressed with his athleticism, technique, and poise in pass protection. Coaches have praised his progress and comfort in the system, signaling that he is well ahead of schedule.

Kansas City made headlines this offseason by signing veteran Jaylon Moore to a two-year, $30 million deal. Many expected Moore to be the starter or at least push for the job, especially after Jawaan Taylor's struggles at left tackle last season. Taylor, who was signed to play right tackle in 2023, was forced to switch sides due to injuries and never looked fully comfortable. Now with Moore in the mix and Taylor likely returning to the right side, Simmons has quietly emerged as the best option on the left.

Simmons' development is an encouraging sign for the Chiefs, who are looking to protect Patrick Mahomes at all costs. A reliable blindside protector allows the offense to maintain its identity and keeps Mahomes upright in critical moments. If Simmons continues to play at this level through the preseason, the coaching staff may not feel the need to rotate or experiment. Establishing continuity on the offensive line before Week One would be a major win.

The Chiefs have built a strong infrastructure through the draft and smart free agency decisions. Hitting on a rookie left tackle would give them another valuable piece on a roster already loaded with talent. Simmons has the tools to succeed, and all signs point to him getting a real chance to prove it early. Training camp battles can shift quickly, but for now, Kansas City seems to have found its answer on the edge. If Simmons can hold his own against top-tier edge rushers during preseason reps, it will further solidify his grip on the starting job. The team will continue evaluating every snap, yet momentum is clearly swinging in his favor.
