Is the End of an Era Approaching for UConn Women’s Basketball?
A masterfully built program, 12 national titles, and hundreds of talented alumni. What more could a basketball coach want? For Geno Auriemma, the answer is always more: more hard work, more titles, more success. It isn’t out of arrogance or disdain, but because of the standards he has upheld throughout his career. After 40 years of coaching, when will it be time for Auriemma to call it quits?
Geno Auriemma, Before He Was the Winningest Coach of All Time
Geno Auriemma was hired as the head coach of the UConn women’s basketball team in 1985. Since then, he’s taken the Huskies and shaped them into a dynasty. Many women’s basketball legends that we know and love were a part of the prestigious UConn program. Sue Bird, Rebecca Lobo, Tina Charles, and Maya Moore, among others, are some of the legends that Auriemma coached. His mantra throughout the years has stayed mostly the same: you must be willing to put in extra effort for yourself and the team.
The Secret to Success? Consistency.
There aren’t many ways UConn could maintain its dominance as a program for over 40 years. The players must be willing to work hard, and the coach must encourage the hard work. This is no problem for Geno Auriemma. He is known for his tough demeanor, even though players often say he’s a softy at heart. He holds his team to the highest standard to ensure success both on and off the court. Even as he’s gotten older, Auriemma hasn’t let up on pushing his players to be their best. That right there is why he’s built the most iconic women’s basketball program in history.
Back-To-Back Championships for the Huskies?
If anyone can win back-to-back national titles, it’s Geno Auriemma and his Huskies. However, this begs the question of whether or not retirement is in Auriemma’s future. After the 2025 national championship run led by Paige Bueckers, everyone wondered if that was what he needed to close out his iconic coaching career. Auriemma never settles, constantly demanding more from his players while holding himself to that very same uncompromising standard. He returned to coach Sarah Strong, Azzi Fudd, and the rest of the Huskies for the 2025-2026 season, and hopefully to another championship. When the day arrives for Auriemma to hang up his hat, it will be the end of the most decorated coaching career in the history of college basketball.
