Is This Bills Running Back Searching for a New Team for 2026?
Running back James Cook is entering the final year of his rookie contract. Could this be his final year as a Buffalo Bill? Cook has expressed discontent with the franchise through a series of posts and tweets, openly demanding a higher salary. The team has been slow to respond, however, and an agreement has yet to be made. If Cook’s frustrations continue, he will hit free agency in 2026.
Cook made a statement by not attending Buffalo’s voluntary OTA, but the team's general manager, Brandon Beane, is not worried. In an interview with Adam Schein of Mad Dog Sports Radio, he said, “I have no doubt when it's time to play football, he'll be ready to roll." The running back is set to return to the field as a bill this season. However, speculation remains as to what his next move may be.
According to Kevin Patra, a writer for NFL.com, Cook is seeking a deal worth $15 million a year, approximately a $10 million increase from his current salary. The Bills do have other options. Rookie running back Ray Davis has been making waves on the field, and with more experience, could be ready to slot in if Cook departs. Additionally, there are four champion-caliber RBs set to become free agents in 2026: Isiah Pacheco, Travis Etienne, Kyren Williams, and Brian Robinson Jr. If their asking prices are lower, Buffalo may find a more affordable replacement.
As for Cook's landing spot, that remains up in the air. Several teams have ample cap space and are looking to fill that running back one hole. Some viable options would be the Raiders or the Commanders. Both have that cap space cushion and would benefit from a top RB. However, as a free agent in 2026, Cook could simply follow the money.
Despite this, Cook attended the team's mandatory minicamps and is expected to attend the Bills training camp. He is slotted in to be the team's RB1 for the 2025 season. Negotiations will continue to be monitored as we see where this player could end up. However, as for now, Cook is still a Buffalo Bill.
