Is This Former Ohio State QB’s Injury Something the Steelers Need to Worry About?
On Tuesday, during training camp, it was reported that Steelers rookie Quarterback Will Howard had suffered a fractured small bone in his right hand. The former Buckeye and National Champion had many people scared for a moment, but he avoided a major injury. Howard will be sidelined for at least three weeks and is not expected to need surgery. Although it might not seem like it at the moment, this is great news for the late-round draft pick.
Howard has looked very sharp during training camp, and he has a sense of work ethic that can’t be taught. However, listed as the third quarterback on the roster, and after the signing of Aaron Rodgers, expectations for Howard this season were virtually none, barring any injuries from Rodgers or Mason Rudolph. Fans expected to see the first of Will Howard’s action in the NFL in the pre-season; however, fans will probably now have to wait a lot longer. With Rodgers being this obvious day one starter, by the time Howard is back from injury, the season will be underway, and his playing time opportunities will be nullified. That said, I don’t think this will hinder his career or development in the slightest.
I’ve been following Will Howard extensively this offseason, and one thing I will say about him is that the kid loves to work. He has a very unique mind, and he’s able to enter every situation with something new to learn. He’s constantly asking questions, especially towards Rodgers, as their relationship has blossomed since the veteran QB joined the team. Also, coming off a National Championship win is a huge green flag for me. Howard was exceptional all season, and the Buckeyes were the heavy favorites until the end, when he led them to a natty. Having that Championship DNA entering the league is something very few quarterbacks with a true opportunity have. I expect Howard to take his time to rehabilitate, in which he’ll continue learning and doing as much as he can to help the team until his pads are back on. Next season, when Rodgers is likely retired, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s Howard under center for Pittsburgh.
