Jaguars Make Roster Moves Ahead of First Preseason Game

NFL

Before the first Jaguars preseason game on Saturday against the visiting Pittsburgh Steelers, the Jaguars have made some signings, as well as some cuts. With cornerback Montaric Brown going down with an injury that will sideline him for the rest of training camp, the Jaguars have been forced to make two moves to the cornerback group. The team signed veteran cornerback Levi Wallace, as well as offensive lineman Ricky Lee. Additionally, the team has waived receiver Louis Rees-Zammit and UDFA cornerback Aydan White. What does this mean for the secondary?

Fourth-year corner Montaric “Buster” Brown, who had been seen getting first-team reps with the defense, has suffered a leg injury and is not expected to be back for training camp, said head coach Liam Coen. Brown had been a staple of the Jaguars' defense so far during training camp, under new defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile’s scheme, and has been spoken highly of by the coaching staff during the offseason. In response to the injury, the Jaguars have signed veteran cornerback Levi Wallace. Wallace was an undrafted free agent out of Alabama, signing with the Bills. The cornerback would play three seasons for the Bills, where he would become a starter in his second season and would flourish in the role. He would ultimately get hurt during the 2021 season and would leave the Bills and sign with the Steelers during the offseason, on a two-year deal. Wallace would join the Broncos during the 2024 season, where he would ultimately be cut on December 24th. Wallace brings a veteran presence to a cornerback group that is relatively young. As a plus, he is also a solid tackler.

The Jaguars are also adding former Carolina Panther and Jacksonville native, offensive lineman Ricky Lee. The North Carolina A&T player was an undrafted free agent signed by the Panthers. Lee made six appearances on the Panthers during the 2024 season, being used exclusively on special teams. Lee also signed with the Arlington Renegades of the UFL, never appearing in a game. The Jaguars cut Aydan White, who the team signed as an undrafted free agent following the 2025 NFL Draft. The Jaguars also cut ties with rugby star Louis Rees-Zammit, who made a post on his social media that he would like to pursue rugby. Rees-Zammit has been injured for the majority of training camp, although injuries do not seem to be the reason for the transfer back to rugby.

After a multitude of moves, the Jaguars look ready to begin the season. With a much improved secondary from the disaster of 2024, as well as a brand new coaching staff, the Jaguars are poised to have a good season. The addition of Wallace gives the Jaguars more veteran presence in the secondary, as well as another viable option at corner. Lee will most likely see time on special teams, but will probably not make much of an impact on the offensive side of the ball. The Jaguars take on the Steelers on Saturday, August 9th.
