Jays vs. Rays 2026: 17 Hit Barrage Powers Toronto Past AL Leaders

MLB

The Blue Jays may be finally turning their season around and face their toughest test yet against the American League leaders. The Rays are 74-49 and also in Toronto’s division. The 2025 World Series runners-up are looking to win their seventh series in a row and get back to .500. A sweep would put them one game under at 64-65. Tonight they faced Nick Martinez, who has a 2.74 ERA and played in his first MLB All-Star Game this year, and José Soriano, whom the Jays acquired at the trade deadline. Before this game, Toronto had won two of seven against Tampa Bay this year; will this new team identity change that?

The Jays got the scoring started early with George Springer’s single and Alejandro Kirk and Jesús Sánchez’s double, scoring Springer in the top of the first. In the third, Toronto increased its lead with a two-strike, two-run homer from Kirk, making it 4-0. Next inning, Kirk drove in another run and rookie Brett Bateman scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-0. At that point, the Rays took Martinez out of the game. Tampa Bay finally responded in the bottom of the fourth when Ryan Vilade scored on a wild pitch from Soriano. Then Taylor Walls singled to score Cedric Mullins and Richie Palacios, making it 6-3. Toronto didn’t let that deter them, as Kazuma Okamoto hit his 25th homer of the year, the most ever by a Blue Jays rookie, and Bateman singled to score Ernie Clement, making it 8-3 in the fifth. In the top of the seventh, Josh Smith added a two-run homer to make it 10-3. In the eighth, two sacrifice flies from the Rays made it 10-5, but it wasn’t enough as the Jays took the win.

Kirk is Heating Up

The Blue Jays’ backstop has been an essential part of the lineup since his MLB debut in 2020. Unfortunately, he played only five games to start 2026 before fracturing his glove-hand thumb. After two months on the IL, the two-time all-star returned June 12th but naturally wasn’t at 100%. Known for his power hitting, the Silver Slugger had 15 home runs in 2025. So far, he had only five before this game in 2026, but the frequency is a good indicator that his bat is heating up. The first homer came in the second game of the season, while June and July each had one. Halfway through August, he already has three after this game. Tonight the 27-year-old went three-for-six with a home run, a double, a single, three RBIs, two runs, and no strikeouts. If Kirk maintains a .279 AVG, Toronto has a great chance at the MLB Postseason.

The Golden Trade

Toronto traded starter Kevin Gausman to the Cubs and sent their second overall prospect, Arjun Nimmala, along with two other Minor Leaguers, to the Angels for Soriano. The deal is paying off as Toronto won all three games the righty pitched for them. The 27-year-old gave up nine hits and three runs but threw two strikeouts and no walks over five and two-thirds innings tonight. He was also part of two inning-ending double plays. The Dominican Republic native went six innings and four and two-thirds innings in his last two starts and gave up only one earned run in both. With promising rookie starter Trey Yesavage recovering from meniscus surgery, Soriano’s consistency could be the key to success in the AL Wild Card race.
