Knicks Set to Face the Indiana Pacers at Gainbridge Fieldhouse

NBA

The New York Knicks return to the floor Thursday night with a familiar challenge as they face the Indiana Pacers, a team that has tested them repeatedly in recent seasons. This matchup has quietly developed into one of the more competitive Eastern Conference pairings, highlighted by contrasting styles and several tightly contested games. In their most recent meetings, the Knicks and Pacers have often split results, with multiple games decided by single digits. During last season’s matchups, New York found success when it held Indiana under 110 points, reinforcing the importance of defense and tempo control. As the Knicks prepare for Thursday night’s matchup, the goal is clear: dictate pace early and prevent the Pacers from turning the game into a track meet.

Much of New York’s success will again rest on Jalen Brunson, one of the Knicks’ key offensive engines throughout the 2025 season. Brunson has often acted as the Knicks’ secret weapon in their previous meetings, relying on craft, footwork, and poise to exploit mismatches in the half-court. His matchup with Tyrese Haliburton will be one of the night’s focal points. Haliburton is the engine of Indiana’s offense, excelling in transition and pick-and-roll situations, but the Knicks have historically limited his effectiveness by forcing him into tougher half-court decisions.

With Julius Randle no longer in New York, the Knicks’ frontcourt identity has evolved into a more balanced, defense-first approach. OG Anunoby and Mikal Bridges now shoulder a significant two-way burden, providing physical perimeter defense while spacing the floor offensively. Their ability to guard multiple positions will be critical against an Indiana team that thrives on movement and ball sharing. Inside, Mitchell Robinson remains a cornerstone. When Robinson controls the glass and protects the rim, the Knicks are at their best, limiting second-chance points and discouraging drives at the basket.

Beyond the stars, this game may be decided by the effort areas that have defined Knicks basketball. Josh Hart’s relentless rebounding from the guard spot, New York’s commitment to winning loose balls, and disciplined transition defense will all factor heavily. The Pacers will look to stretch the floor and increase possessions, but the Knicks’ formula for success remains unchanged: protect the ball, dominate the boards, and force Indiana to operate in the half-court. If New York can execute that plan and lean on its leaders in key moments, Thursday night presents an opportunity not just for a win, but for another statement against a rising conference rival.
