Manchester United on a Roll: The Interim Coach Who Has Secured Success
Just last weekend, I was writing about Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Premier League table-toppers Arsenal in a game that defied all expectations and was incredibly fun to watch. This week, what seemed like a stroke of luck is actually becoming a trend for the Red Devils. Earlier today, Manchester United beat Tottenham 2-0, marking the fourth undefeated game for the team, which now sits in fourth place in the Premier League table. Manchester United managed to surpass Liverpool and Chelsea a few weeks ago and is currently in one of the Champions League qualifying spots. Only a month ago, the Devils were sitting seventh, behind Newcastle. Since former coach Ruben Amorim’s dismissal and Michael Carrick’s temporary appointment, there has been a change in gears. Fans speculate Carrick is here to stay.
Former Manchester United coach Ruben Amorim oversaw 63 games for the Devils and never once achieved a four-match winning streak. In just over a month, Michael Carrick has done what the man before him couldn’t. And he is just the interim coach, appointed until the end of this season. What Carrick has managed to do so well can be traced back to his background; an ex-midfielder who captained United, one can assume he knows the club better than anyone. However, it is not only the club he knows; Carrick won a Premier League title and a Champions League title during his career, a feat very few can emulate. The provisional coach for the Devils probably feels at home inside and outside Old Trafford.
What comes next for Carrick might not be too easy to predict. Despite the interim’s great success in this short period of time, voices from within United question whether his lack of experience would be a toll on his coaching. Initially, it seemed as though Champions League qualification would be enough for Carrick to secure the spot, but his unexpected victories have ironically raised the bar higher. With Carrick’s success as a rookie manager, United faces a tough decision in its search for a permanent coach. As of now, fans can enjoy Manchester United making a comeback that will surely go down in history as one of the most impressive revivals.
