Mavericks Win the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery

NBA

The Dallas Mavericks have won the 2025 NBA Draft Lottery. Dallas came into the lottery with a one percent chance to win. Now, they have earned the right to draft Cooper Flagg, the projected number one overall pick. This has been a rollercoaster season for Mavs fans as they watch their team trade away one superstar in Luka Doncic, and now they will undoubtedly draft a future one.

Flagg will join a roster that is ready to win now, barring any injuries. The former Duke Blue Devil will now call Kyrie Irving, Anthony Davis, and Klay Thompson teammates. The 6-foot-nine forward will bring his two-way game to an organization that prioritizes drafting players who can excel on the offensive and defensive ends of the court. Flagg came into college with high expectations and exceeded them. He averaged 19 points, seven rebounds, and four assists and led the Blue Devils to the Final Four this season. Flagg finished his first and last college season by winning the Naismith Player of the Year Award.

Coming into the lottery, the Jazz, Wizards, and Hornets all had a 14 percent chance to secure the number one pick; however, the luck of the draw did not go in their favor. Charlotte was the only team that drew close to getting the number one pick, but they secured the fourth overall pick. All three of those teams had the worst records in the league last year and were looking for a chance to rebound. However, they will have to regroup and select players who will benefit their team. The Spurs and 76ers benefited from the luck of the draw as they secured the second and third overall pick, respectively. San Antonio has two lottery picks and could use their picks to put together a package for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. The 76ers were mired by injuries this year and essentially tanked to get a lottery pick in this year’s draft.

Overall, with over a month away until the draft, fans know one thing is certain, and that is Flagg will undoubtedly be a Dallas Maverick. However, how will the rest of the draft shape out? There are great players in Ace Bailey and Dylan Harper who contribute to a team right away. The future of any team can change on draft night and it will be interesting to see how the rest of the draft unfolds.
