Mike McCarthy Confirms Steelers Will Hold 2027 Training Camp at Saint Vincent College
Monday marked the conclusion of Mike McCarthy’s first training camp as the Steelers’ head coach. The team hired the Pittsburgh native after Mike Tomlin stepped down in January. McCarthy confirmed that the team will continue the tradition of holding training camp at Saint Vincent College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The team began using their facilities for training camp in 1966. They’ve consistently held it there every year, except in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Audacy, Monday was the fourth practice that was moved, shortened, or closed to fans due to the weather. This hasn’t deterred McCarthy from deciding to bring the Steelers back to Latrobe for training camp in 2027 and beyond. The Pittsburgh native said, “I was talking to Omar. I’m actually looking forward to next year because I’m going to enjoy training camp next year.”
McCarthy made it clear that Saint Vincent College left a lasting impression on him. He remarked, “As far as the support staff, the facilities, Saint Vincent, as a whole, is an A-plus.” He added, “I really think this is not only a special place, but this is a great place to train a football team, you know, just the whole environment. The only real negative was we had to cancel a couple of practices. Our best practices are when our fans are out there.”
McCarthy believes that staying in dorms and getting to know each other off the field is a valuable experience for the players. He explained, “The conversations these men have at dinner, at night, around the pool table, all those things, the Home Run Derby. To me, training camp is critical for your football team. I’ve been involved with training camp at home, but they did stay in the dorms. I just think the ability to have everybody together, going away to camp, is special. I think it gives you a real shot to start off the season the right way.” McCarthy also mentioned, “Players may not want to hear this, but we’ll look to stay longer next year.”
Before the year 2000, it was common for teams to travel elsewhere for training camp. However, the majority of NFL teams now hold their training camps at their home facilities. As of 2026, the Steelers are one of only seven teams that go away for training camp. The other teams and their respective training camp locations are the Buffalo Bills, Saint John Fisher University; the Dallas Cowboys, the River Ridge Playing Fields in Oxnard, California; the Indianapolis Colts, Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, Indiana; the Kansas City Chiefs, Missouri Western State University; the Los Angeles Rams, Loyola Marymount University; and the New York Giants, the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
