NBA Champion Reserve Big Inks New Deal with the Spurs

NBA

The rise of Luke Kornet from an undrafted rookie to an NBA champion has been built on consistency, humility, and versatility. After signing a two-way contract with the New York Knicks in 2017, Kornet made a memorable debut that included a double-double, three three-pointers, and four blocks. He earned a full contract the following year and spent two seasons in New York before joining the Chicago Bulls in 2019. In Chicago, he served as a stretch five in a reserve role, providing floor spacing and shot-blocking over two seasons. Though not a household name, Kornet developed a reputation as a smart, unselfish big with a high basketball IQ.

His career path after Chicago took him through several organizations in a short span. Between 2021 and 2022, Kornet played for the Celtics, Cavaliers, Bucks, and Maine Celtics of the G League before finding a steadier role back in Boston. He rejoined the Celtics full-time in 2022 and gradually became a big piece in their bench rotation. By the 2023-2024 season, he had fully embraced his role, averaging 5.3 points, 4.1 rebounds, and shooting a remarkable 70% from the field across 63 games. His ability to protect the rim, rebound effectively, and stay ready made him a valuable asset on a championship-level roster.

Kornet’s patience and persistence were rewarded in June 2024 when the Boston Celtics defeated the Dallas Mavericks in five games to win the NBA Finals. Although he didn’t always play heavy minutes, Kornet’s contributions throughout the season and his locker room presence helped solidify Boston’s depth. The seven-foot-one center became known for his energy, screen-setting, and the occasional “Kornet Contest,” a unique method of shot disruption. His efficient play and understanding of the Celtics’ system showed his evolution from fringe roster play to dependable reserve. During the summer of 2024, he re-signed with Boston following their title run, capping off a meaningful stretch with the franchise.

Now, as he begins a new chapter with the Spurs, after signing a four-year deal worth 41 million, Kornet brings championship experience and a team-first mentality. His size, unselfishness, and willingness to do the little things make him a natural fit in a structured rotation. Whether backing up the starting center or stepping in during key stretches, he provides stability and maturity in the paint. For the Spurs, this signing adds not only depth but also a player who knows what it takes to contribute to winning. As the upcoming season approaches, Kornet will look to make an impact both on the court and in the locker room in San Antonio.
